3. Braxton Miller’s rollercoaster season.Since spraining the MCL in his left knee in OSU’s win against San Diego State, junior quarterback Braxton Miller has struggled to play consistently. After a four-touchdown performance against Wisconsin, Miller played poorly against Northwestern, turning the ball over three times and failing to find the end zone. Now Miller heads into the game against Penn State on the heels of a performance against Iowa in which he threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns and added 102 yards on the ground. If Miller wants to lead the Buckeyes to another undefeated season, he will need to find more consistency in his play and keep his mistakes to a minimum. Although he was successful against the Hawkeyes, it remains to be seen which Miller will show up Saturday. If Miller can avoid turning the ball over and instead score a couple of touchdowns, it will go a long way to pushing the Buckeyes to 8-0 overall on the season. 4. Can Ohio Stadium and Buckeye Nation rattle Christian Hackenberg?True freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg has been all Penn State could have asked for this season. The 6-foot-4-inch Palmyra, Va., product has thrown for 1,672 yards and 11 touchdowns so far in 2013, against six interceptions. His three first-half scoring tosses kept the Nittany Lions afloat early on in their quadruple overtime win against Michigan two weeks ago, and the freshman is only getting better. OSU’s secondary has taken multiple hits this season, with the loss of senior safety Christian Bryant to a broken ankle against Wisconsin Sept. 28 and Roby last week to the ejection. If Hackenberg is able to find holes and complete big plays to Robinson and others, the team could light up the scoreboard. 5. Will the pressure get to OSU?The Buckeyes currently sport the nation’s longest winning streak at 19 games, and with the opportunity to take another step toward a Leaders Division title, will the pressure finally get to the team? The last time OSU boasted a 19-game winning streak, Meyer was on the other sidelines with Florida when it ended in the 2006 BCS National Championship. A victory against conference rival Penn State (8 p.m. Saturday at Ohio Stadium) would surely vault the Buckeyes ahead into their next two games on the road against Purdue and Illinois. 2. Will Bradley Roby be ready to step up?This year hasn’t gone exactly how redshirt-junior cornerback Bradley Roby had planned. After being named a preseason All-American, Roby was then suspended for the season opener after a July incident at a Bloomington, Ind., bar. He has been outplayed during games against California and Wisconsin and was then ejected from the game against Iowa for targeting. Roby is expected to play the whole game against the Nittany Lions and will likely be matched up against Penn State junior wide receiver Allen Robinson. Robinson is averaging 117.5 receiving yards per game, the highest among players that OSU has faced so far in 2013. It will be another test for Roby, who continues to watch his NFL Draft stock plummet with his struggles. If Roby can contain Robinson, it could be a long day for Penn State. How many yards does Carlos Hyde gain?Let’s face it: The lead running back role in the Buckeye offense belongs to Carlos Hyde. Although redshirt-senior Jordan Hall played well during Hyde’s three-game suspension stemming from an incident at a Columbus bar in July, Hyde has completely taken over No. 4 Ohio State’s (7-0, 3-0) backfield. In the four games since returning from suspension, Hyde has rushed for 41, 85, 168 and 149 yards, respectively, and five total touchdowns. Two of those games came against then-top 10 rushing defenses in Wisconsin and Iowa, and Hyde was still successful. Penn State (4-2, 1-1) comes into the game Saturday with the No. 21 rushing defense in the country, so Hyde will look to have another big game to help OSU win its 20th straight game.

Director of football Joaquin Caparros concedes that Sevilla are not optimistic over signing Alvaro Morata from Chelsea, despite the player himself being interested in making the moveSince arriving at Chelsea in July 2017 for a club-record deal of £60m from Real Madrid, Morata has been frequently linked with an exit from Stamford Bridge. The Spanish striker has only scored 16 goals in 47 Premier League games for the Blues and his struggles up front, along with fellow Olivier Giroud, has forced coach Maurizio Sarri to deploy Eden Hazard in a “false nine” role.Reports emerged in Spain this week claiming that Morata’s agent, Juanma Lopez, arrived at Sevilla on Monday to begin talks over a six-month loan deal.Chelsea hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham hopes for more Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Tammy Abraham hopes this season will be his big breakthrough at Chelsea after firing his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Wolves. But Caparros admits that Chelsea’s tough stance in negotiations makes a deal for Morata unlikely.“It is true that we have an interest in this player [Morata], but it is a very, very complicated operation,” Caparros told SevillaTV.“The player may want to come here over other options, but it is very complicated. The Barisieur is an alarm clock that brews a fresh cup of coffee for you, bedside. Patrick Holland/CNET Imagine waking up from a deep slumber to the gentle sound of water boiling and dripping onto coffee grounds. The air fills with the warm, welcome aroma of coffee. You open your eyes to see a clear glass cup on top of your alarm clock fill drop by drop with beautiful caffeinated gold. If you need cold half-and-half, no worries, there’s a petite chilled cup inside the clock at the ready. For coffee lovers this scenario may seem like a dream, but it’s the reality delivered by the Barisieur hybrid alarm clock/coffee maker. The alarm clock initially got my attention at CES this year because it reminded me of the elaborate chemistry setup that Gale uses to make coffee on Breaking Bad. The Barisieur is absolutely stunning to look at, balancing the clean beauty of scientific glassware with the natural appeal of stained walnut. A drawer on the front holds ground coffee and a scoop, and there’s even a tiny cup for cold milk submerged in the base. An infrared sensor regulates the temperature to keep the milk around 3 degrees Celsius, which converts to about 37 degrees Fahrenheit. The Barisieur doesn’t have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Alexa or Google Assistant. The only thing it connects is you with the start of your day, awakening each of your senses. Tags 2 The shaky world of coffee maker startups Share your voice Now playing: Watch this: CES 2019: A pet dryer, a bed that rocks you to sleep… The idea is to set the Barisieur up the night before by portioning coffee into a metal mesh cone filter and filling the glass flask with water. You can also steep tea in it if you prefer.I saw the alarm clock all prepped to make coffee and it evoked a delightful alchemy feel, as if I had laid out ingredients to make a secret potion, which is what coffee is for many of us.The brew process starts when the alarm goes off or when you push the button. The Barisieur lacks any kind of touchscreen, instead opting for physical buttons and dials. Also worth noting: You can set the alarm to go off without making coffee, just like a regular alarm clock. But why would you do that? Once the alarm is triggered, the water inside the flask is heated and pushed up the siphon tube to drip over the grounds. Imagine waking up to this every morning. Barisieur I tasted a cup of coffee brewed by the Barisieur and it was good. It had a smoothness to it reminiscent of coffee made with a Hario dripper. I was also impressed with how fast it was able to brew a cup. It’s not as fast as something like a Keurig, but you’re getting a much better cup of coffee. Practically speaking, many kitchen coffee makers already let you set a brew time. An alarm clock that doubles as a coffee brewer seems like something the inventor Randall Peltzer from Gremlins would dream up. But the Barisieur’s sophisticated design and straightforward operation should make it right at home at the bedside for many coffee lovers. It’s also easy to envision it in a boutique hotel or a nice Airbnb rental. My only gripe, and it’s a small one, is that it makes just one cup. If you live with someone, there’s bound to be an awkward moment fighting over whose cup it is. I mean, I guess you could share. The Barisieur costs $445 or £345, which converts roughly to AU$625, and is available for purchase now. 5:32 Comments 11 Photos Coffee Makers
A nine-month-old dogecoin, a cryptocurrency has been soaring recently and touched its highest value since May, on Saturday. This has lead to the speculation that investors pump money into the cryptocurrencies to artificially inflate its price and later sell it off for a profit. Another factor that may have led to the increase in the price of dogecoin is switching the virtual currency to auxiliary proof of work (AUXPoW) or merge mining. This will allow investors to transact currency by providing an additional security to the decentralised network, according to coindesk. The sudden boost has driven market cap of dogecoin to $91 million eventually and around $40 million in one week, reported CoinDesk. However, experts opine that this boost is short-lived.”What’s happening now is a lot of investors are buying in because they see dogecoin as an attractive investment,” said a member of sub-reddit registered in the name of such_investor.US Approves Bitcoin Swap:A derivatives exchange has become the first to receive approval from US Federal Regulator on Friday as TeraExchange got approved from the Commodities Future Trading platform. This would allow investors to switch over to digital currency under the approval of US Federal reserve.Christian Martin, Tera Exchange’s CEO told Wall Street Journal: “A robust price index also helps the growing bitcoin trading community to accurately mark-to-market positions while establishing trust and stability in this growing global marketplace.”
The photo shows chaotic situation on a road. File PhotoRuling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) ministers, parliamentarians, leaders and their relatives are largely responsible for the chaotic situation prevailing in the public transport sector, bus owners and experienced drivers say.The situation has worsened after the officials of law enforcement agencies started doing business in the sector buying buses and minibuses in the name of other persons, they claimed. The ruling party leaders and their relatives control the bus owners and workers’ associations in the capital, which restricts the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and law enforcement agencies to take effective actions against the vehicles without fitness and route permit, and the drivers who drive recklessly, they say. There is no more rule of law in the roads, they observed. The chaotic situation of the transport sector came to the fore after school and college students began a demonstration demanding punishment to those responsible for 29 July accident on Dhaka airport road, which killed two of their fellows, and resignation of the shipping minister for his comments on the accident.Abdul Karim Rajib and Dia Khanam Mim, class XII and XI students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College, were killed on the spot after an Uttara-bound bus of ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’ lost control and ran over the students standing beside the road around 12:00 noon.Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan’s brother-in-law Syed Nurul Haque alias Nannu was one of the directors of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus service. He, however, told Prothom Alo that he is no longer involved with the company and sold his buses three years ago.Shahjahan Khan is the president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation. Some 70 buses of Kanak Paribahan, owned by his brother Hafizur Rahman, operate in three routes in the capital. The minister encourages the transport workers to stage demonstrations whenever citizens demand safety on roads or courts take action against reckless driving. He advised the workers from a meeting at his home to enforce strike after a court handed down death sentence to a driver and lifetime imprisonment to another one in February 2017.Bangladesh Road Transport Samity president and state minister for cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga was also present in the meeting.Shipping minister, however, on Wednesday told Prothom Alo that slowly the transport sector is being disciplined and the number of road accidents is waning as he is in leadership.Another influential person of this sector is Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association general secretary Khandaker Enayet Ullah, a vice-president of AL’s Dhaka north unit.Mentioning that he is in the business for the last 35 years, he said, there is no such law in Bangladesh that bars people from a certain profession to do politics here.AL MPs Pankaj Nath, AKM Shamim Osman and two former MPs Shahida Tarekh Dipti and Ashrafunnesa Mosharraf (Swapna Services) are also involved in the transport business.Swechhsebak League general secretary Pankaj Nath-owned bus service company ‘Bihanga Paribahan’ began its journey in 2009. The transport committee of the government gave permission to 240 buses of Bihanga Paribahan to operate on five routes in and around the capital.Shamim Osman’s bus service company is ZN Corporation. Some 50 AC buses of this company were permitted to operate between Dhaka’s Gulistan and Narayanganj.Besides, MPs’ family members, Dhaka city Awami League leaders and associate bodies of the ruling party, Dhaka city corporations’ councillors are also involved in the business.Officials of the government and law enforcement agencies are also found to be involved in the business. Relatives of a few high officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) do the business jointly with several companies. Several persons of a certain district have opened public transport companies in the last few years. Most of these ministers, MPs, and influential persons have become owners of bus companies after the Awami League came to power in 2009. If you’re a woman of a certain age living in the District and receiving Medicaid benefits, don’t be surprised if AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia reminds you that it’s time for a mammogram.AmeriHealth, one of four Medicaid-managed care organizations, is ratcheting up its efforts to ensure all women due — or overdue — for a mammogram undergo breast-cancer screenings, Keith Maccannon, director of marketing, community relations and outreach for AmeriHealth Caritas in the District, told the AFRO.Victorianne Russell Walton is a breast cancer survivor and founder of It’s in the Genes. (Courtesy photo)One of the ways AmeriHealth reaches out to those women is by partnering with It’s In the Genes, a nonprofit, breast-cancer advocacy group based in Southwest D.C., to hold “PINKIE” parties at all of the major hospitals in the District and surrounding areas. PINKIE stands for “Purposely Involved N Keeping Individuals Educated.” At the events women chat with breast cancer survivors and get mammograms in a fun, festive environment complete with spa services, a deejay, swag bags and more.“Even though they know they’re due for a mammogram, they may need a little extra support to go out and get that done,” Maccannon said of women.Typically, between 25 and 35 women at the parties get mammograms on the spot, Maccannon said. If the women don’t want them done at the parties, they can sign up to get one at another time for free or at a reduced price. According to costhelper.com, a privately-held Internet startup located in Silicon Valley that provides consumer information about thousands of goods and services, the average cost of a mammogram is about $102. As part of its ongoing outreach, AmeriHealth plans to hold more “PINKIE” parties this year. AmeriHealth is focused on getting women aged 40 and above in for mammograms. Women between ages 50 and 54 are supposed to get mammograms annually, while women 55 and above should have them every two years, MacCannon said. “Our goal as a managed care organization is to make sure that all of the members enrolled in our plan get those screenings and those healthcare exams that they are supposed to get according to their age and gender,” Maccannon said.Mammograms, which allow doctors to help see when there’s a change in the breast can be a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer. Besides the PINKIE parties, AmeriHealth also gets the word out about mammograms by way of phone calls, targeted mailings, automated phone reminders, text messages, the George Washington University Mobile Mammography Van, and sponsorships from local groups that emphasize the importance of mammograms. In 2016, AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia had roughly 4,047 members meeting the criteria for a breast cancer screening exam, MacCannon said. Of those members, AmeriHealth’s outreach efforts led to nearly 63 percent of them getting the exam in 2017, he said. The District appears to be ground zero for breast cancer. Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that the District has the eighth highest mortality rate from breast cancer in the U.S. Nationwide, Black women are also most likely to die from the disease than any other group, statistics show. Victorianne Russell Walton, 52, founder of It’s in the Genes, is a breast cancer survivor who had health insurance at the time of her 2007 diagnosis. She alleges that in her case, her doctor was at fault for misdiagnosing her four times. “If you can’t trust your doctor and if your doctor of years is misdiagnosing you, who can you trust?” Walton asked. She was convinced she had breast cancer because it ran in her family, so she kept persisting. “They didn’t analyze the tumor, they were analyzing fatty tissue,” Walton said. “Each time they said, ‘It’s benign.’ I said, ‘No, it’s not.’”She was up against a doctor who initially thought her health problems had to do with her being an overweight Black woman who ate a lot of salt. Walton said she cut back her salt intake years before. She declined to name the doctor, citing ongoing litigation. “We have these stereotypes against us before we even walk in the room. I think it’s a form of same old, same old,” she said.By the time Walton was finally diagnosed in May 2007, she had a 50 percent chance of living. Today, she encourages women to be just as pushy as she was with her doctor. They should also take the initiative and get their scheduled mammograms“Superman is not coming; Superwoman is not coming,” Walton said.
More information: Oceanic Mass Transport by Mesoscale Eddies, Science DOI: 10.1126/science.1252418ABSTRACTOceanic transports of heat, salt, and fresh water, dissolved CO2 and other tracers regulate global climate change and distribution of natural marine resources. While the time-mean ocean circulation transports fluid as a conveyor belt, fluid parcels can also be trapped and transported discretely by migrating mesoscale eddies. By combining available satellite altimetry and Argo profiling float data, we show that the eddy-induced zonal mass transport can reach a total meridionally integrated value up to 30-40 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s−1), and it occurs mainly in subtropical regions where the background flows are weak. This transport is comparable in magnitude with that of the large-scale, wind- and thermohaline-driven circulation. Three-dimensional structure of an oceanic mesoscale eddy and the fluid trapped by this eddy. Credit: Sergey Kryazhimskiy Journal information: Science Explore further First direct evidence that breaking waves cause horizontal eddies (Phys.org) —A trio of researchers, two from the Ocean University of China, and a third from the University of Hawaii, has found that mesoscale eddies—swirling masses of water that travel westward in the subtropics—appear to carry far more water with them than scientists have realized. In their paper published in the journal Science, Zhengguang Zhang, Wei Wang and Bo Qiu discuss the study they undertook of the water vortices using altimetry and data from ARGO submersibles to measure the size of the eddies and to track their movements over time. Mesoscale eddies are spinning masses of water (50 to 300 miles in diameter) that fall between observable eddies such as those created by ships and very large ones known as gyres. Scientists have known about them for quite some time, but till now, very little was known about their size and movements. To find out more, the researchers analyzed data from both satellites and submersible probes.Satellites operated by NASA have radar onboard that is sensitive enough to measure the altitude of the Earth’s surface to within inches—and that includes the oceans. Mesoscale eddies can be detected due to depressions formed as they spin. The researchers collected a decade’s worth of such data allowing them to create an animated map that shows the movement of multiple mesoscale eddies across the oceans—always moving east to west, and generally in subtropical regions, where background flows are weak. The team also studied data from the more than 3,000 ARGO submersibles that have been deployed to various depths in the world’s oceans—that allowed them to create 3D renderings of the eddies as they exist beneath the surface.Putting all the data together, the team was able to see that such eddies can live for months, or even years—it also allowed for calculating how much water they carry, approximately 30-40 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3 s−1), which is roughly equivalent to the amount of ocean water moved by wind or due to temperature variations. The amount is far more than most oceanographers had imagined, and stirs questions regarding the role they may play as the oceans grow warmer. The researchers plan to continue their research, focusing most specifically on how tightly the eddies hold on to material they capture, such as floating debris, pollutants, heat and carbon. © 2014 Phys.org Citation: Mesoscale eddies found to move far more ocean water than previously thought (2014, June 27) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2014-06-mesoscale-eddies-ocean-previously-thought.html This document is subject to copyright. The UK video sector grew by 10% in 2018 taking the total market value to £2.34 billion, according to the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE).The Greatest ShowmanThe BASE figures, based on data from the Official Charts Company and Futuresource Consulting, indicate that 63% of consumers now choose to rent or stream film and TV content, while 37% of category value generated by people choosing to buy and own content either on disc or download.Despite what BASE described as a “challenging broader high street trading environment,” 59% of transactional spend was still for the physical formats of DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. The growth of digital transactional also “surpassed all expectations in 2018,” reaching a total market value of £400 million. Electronic sell-through film sales grew 36% year-on-year with The Greatest Showman establishing itself as the largest digital release to date, selling in excess of 770,000 digital copies since April.Overall, The Greatest Showman was the biggest-selling title of the year, shifting in excess of 2.68 million copies, with 72% of those sales coming from physical formats.Game of Thrones led the 2018 TV charts, with The Complete Seventh Season selling more than 160,000 copies, including box sets, to top the disc chart. Overall franchise sales totalled more than a quarter of a million copies, according to BASE.“The UK transactional digital video exceeded expectations in 2018, cementing its position as a global leader in this sector,” said Futuresource Consulting’s principal analyst for entertainment, David Sidebottom.“Electronic sell-through movies have excelled throughout the year, as consumers become increasingly familiar with the concept and service provider competition fuels purchases. iVoD (movie rentals via online services) has also witnessed increased momentum in 2018, growing by over 20%, with an additional 4 million smart TVs and media streamers in UK homes helping drive uptake.”BASE chief executive, Liz Bales, said: “The third consecutive year of growth in the video category underlines the fact that audiences remain engaged with a broad variety of home entertainment content and format options. This serves as a testament to the innovation and energy that continue to drive the home entertainment category even as the high street retail environment presents clear challenges in some areas.”“Today’s customers enjoy a multitude of options when it comes to keeping themselves entertained and clearly continue to find a huge amount of relevance in the video category which, more flexibly than ever before, caters to every need; whether that is watching on the go, building a digital library or securing the absolute best viewing experience premium formats now guarantee.”
Editor’s note: Today, we have something special for you. Instead of our usual market commentary, we have a brand-new interview with E.B. Tucker, editor of The Casey Report. As you may know, E.B. sees tough times ahead for the U.S. economy and stock market. To prepare, E.B. has encouraged his readers to hold extra cash, own physical gold, and only invest in stocks that can weather the coming storm. He’s also shorting some of America’s most vulnerable companies. Shorting is betting that a stock will fall. If it does, you make money. It sounds easy. But most investors have never shorted a stock in their life. They think it’s something only the “pros” do. Today, we put that myth to rest. Below, E.B. explains how to short stocks…what he looks for in a short…and how to avoid mistakes most investors make when shorting stocks. We’ll even reveal a stock E.B. is shorting right now. Casey Report readers have already made 18% on this short…but we think much bigger gains are on the way. Justin Spittler, editor, Casey Daily Dispatch: E.B., can you explain how shorting works? E.B. Tucker: The first step is to get a margin account. [A margin account allows you to borrow money to buy stocks.] After that, it’s fairly simple. Let’s say you want to short one share of tech giant IBM. To do this, you would actually have to borrow one share from your broker. You would then sell that share on the marketplace. If IBM is trading for $100, then $100 will land in your account when you sell it. Now, let’s say IBM’s stock falls to $90. You decide to pocket this 10% gain. To close this trade, you would buy back one share of IBM [buy to cover] and return it to your broker. You keep the $10 profit. JS: Easy enough. Why should investors short stocks? E.B.: Shorting can protect you from market declines. If stocks crash, the payoff can be huge. If they don’t, you only lost the cost of being protected. It’s like buying insurance. JS: A lot of investors think shorting is a “sophisticated” strategy. Is that true? E.B.: Shorting isn’t just for sophisticated traders. Anyone can do it. But you better have a strategy… Let’s say you own 10 stocks. If this were my portfolio today, I’d have seven “longs” and three “shorts.” [A long position is a bet that a stock will rise.] Right now in The Casey Report, we’re long world-class companies that can make money no matter what happens to the economy. On the short side, we’re betting against stocks that will get clobbered during a market correction. [More on those stocks in a second…] Having essentially 30% of the portfolio dedicated to shorts means we’re looking for the market to decline right now. JS: What are common mistakes investors make when shorting stocks? E.B.: Most investors don’t think to buy insurance until it’s too late. By then, they’ve already lost a lot of money. It’s also “expensive” to short stocks when everything is falling. It’s like trying to buy flood insurance for your beach house when a hurricane is about to make landfall. Sure, someone might sell you insurance, but you’re going to pay a fortune for it. Eventually, Signet could have to slash prices to move its inventory, meaning it could make less money on every wedding ring it sells. Signet’s business could completely derail. In a way, this is already happening. From 2014 to 2016, Signet’s annual bad debt expenses rose from $138 million to $190 million. That’s a 30% increase. Over the same period, credit sales grew by only 20%. That means bad debt expenses rose 50% faster than credit sales. Signet’s stock is already down 18% since we shorted it in June. But it could go much lower if the economy hits a soft spot like I expect. We’re also shorting a major airline in The Casey Report. This stock could plunge 50% or more before all is said and done. And we’re shorting a major health insurance company that could unravel as the Obamacare boondoggle implodes. These shorts should hand Casey Report readers huge gains if the market tanks. We will then use this cash to go shopping when everyone else is stunned and confused. Editor’s note: As you may remember, U.S. stocks began the year on a rough note. The S&P 500 plunged 11% over the first six weeks before recovering. According to E.B., the brief downturn was “only a warning.” In this short presentation, E.B. talks about a major financial crisis on the horizon. As you’ll see, this coming crisis has already quietly begun in an “overlooked” part of the global financial system. The good news is that you can still prepare. At the end of this video, you’ll learn how to access E.B.’s top ideas (including his three shorts). Click here to learn more. JS: So, when is it a good time to short stocks? E.B.: I like to short stocks when the market is red hot. When stocks are up big, investors become less disciplined. They overlook problems that would normally scare them away. The higher stocks climb, the more investors throw caution to the wind. After all, it’s human nature to think the good times will never end. Eventually, companies can’t live up to the market’s unrealistic expectations. You see, the stock market “prices in” the future, meaning the price of a stock reflects how much money investors think a company will make tomorrow, next quarter, or next year. Sooner or later, some companies will disappoint investors. When that happens, look out below. JS: So you like to short expensive stocks? E.B.: It’s not that simple. You see, a lot of investors get carried away shorting. They’ll look for the next high-flyer and try to call its top. That can be dangerous. Shorting a stock because it’s “overvalued” is very difficult. Just look at Amazon (AMZN). It trades at more than 140 times future earnings. That’s off the charts. But the stock made a new high today. Amazon’s been expensive for years, and all it’s done is keep rising. That’s because it’s one of the most dominant companies on the planet. In other words, you shouldn’t short a stock just because it’s expensive. After nearly two decades of active investing, I’ve learned to avoid that strategy completely. I like to short companies that are dependent on a certain customer or economic situation that I expect to change. If my assumptions about changing economics are right, a company’s valuation today might be irrational and set to decline sharply. JS: The U.S. stock market looks very fragile right now. Is now a good time to short stocks? E.B.: Stocks have been rising for almost eight years. Corporate profits have been falling since 2014. And many key economic indicators, like the Purchasing Managers’ Index, are flashing warning signs. So, yes. It’s a good time to short. Surprisingly, most investors are still fully committed to stocks. They haven’t set aside enough cash. And they certainly aren’t shorting many stocks. If stocks start falling, these folks could take heavy losses. But since we have three open short positions, Casey Report readers should make money no matter what direction the market heads. JS: Can you tell us about a stock you’re shorting right now? E.B: One company we’re shorting is Signet Jewelers Ltd. (SIG). The stock hit a 52-week low yesterday. Signet is one of America’s biggest jewelry store chains. It owns jewelry brands you’ve seen at your local mall, like Zales, Jared, and Kay. These might be household names, but don’t confuse Signet with Tiffany & Co (TIF), which caters to a higher-end customer who often pays with cash. Signet serves the average American, and more than half of its customers buy on credit. That could turn into a big problem.
