FC Goa continue march for pole position against Hyderabad FC

first_imgGoa: With two goals and an assist, Hugo Boumous was the catalyst in FC Goa’s dominant 4-1 win against Hyderabad FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday.Braces from Boumous (19′, 50′) and Ferran Corominas’ (64′, 87’) helped Goa pull three points clear at the top with 33 points from 16 matches. Marcelinho’s (64′) free-kick strike was nothing more than a consolation for Hyderabad who remain bottom of the table with six points. The spotlight was on the Gaurs after they sacked Sergio Lobera in the buildup to the game. But Derrick Pereira’s charges started right where they left off.Corominas was set up with a golden chance to break the deadlock eight minutes into the first half as FC Goa started on the front foot. Boumous released Jackichand Singh down the right flank and the winger’s cross to the centre was hit straight at Hyderabad goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani by Corominas from point-blank range. With no support available, Marcelinho tried to create something for Hyderabad when he picked up the ball near the half-way line before dribbling into the box past the Goa defence. The Brazilian forward was on his own inside the box and could only find the side-netting.A minute later, Goa converted their dominance into an opening goal. After Brandon Fernandes’ corner-kick was cleared by Mathew Kilgallon, the ball fell to Mandar Rao Dessai who attempted a long-range effort from outside the box. The left-back scuffed his shot but Boumous slammed home the loose ball from inside the box.Marcelinho came close to scoring again at the other end but missed out on an immediate equaliser. A minute after conceding, a Stankovic corner was side-footed onto the post by the Brazilian. Boumous’ fine form in front of goal continued as the Frenchman scored his eighth goal of the season just five minutes after the restart. He picked up the ball on the left flank, dribbled into the box unopposed and curled a shot into the corner of the net.Marcelinho, who looked to be the only likely scorer for the visitors, executed a free-kick strike to perfection after the hour-mark. Ahmed Jahouh’s tackle on the Brazilian outside the box was punished with a fantastic effort into the net through the gap in the Goa wall. Goa were unfazed by the goal against the run of play and regained their two-goal cushion within minutes. Hugo Boumous played an excellent, defence-splitting through ball into the path of Corominas who timed his run in behind the defence to perfection and caressed the ball past Kattimani into the net. The hosts put the game to bed after Kattimani fouled Corominas from behind and conceded a late penalty. The Spaniard slotted home from 12 yards to send the visitors packing. M&CC Chief Constable fired

first_imgHead of the Constabulary Department at the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), Andrew Foo, was sent packing on Tuesday after the Local Government Commission (LGC) terminated his services.Former Chief Constable Andrew FooA reliable source confirmed that the Chief Constable was removed from his portfolio. However, while details pertaining to his termination remain unclear, the source indicated that it was seen as an “early retirement”.According to the source, the LGC saw Foo’s removal in the public’s interest, citing the passage of the No-Confidence Motion that was passed against him. The motion was moved at one of the M&CC’s statutory meeting, with the aim of ending the “lack of management” that dominated the security department and the poor work outputted by the officers under Foo’s leadership. The motion was carried by 19 council members, two voted against it and three abstained. In 2018, Foo was summoned before the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) in the City Hall which was led by Justice Cecil Kennard (retired), and it was later revealed in the CoI’s final report that oral submissions made by the Chief Constable contained conflicting statements. It was then stated in the report that Foo lacks credibility, integrity, competence, and should be dismissed.Previously, City Hall’s Legal Affairs and Security Committee had recommended that the Chief Constable along with the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Virjanand Gafur, be sent on 14 days leave for serious neglect of duty in relation to their roles in investigating a sexual assault involving a minor at the City Constabulary.Following the motion, Superintendent Andrew Livingstone was posted as acting Chief Constable.last_img read more

Half-time: QPR 1 Charlton 0

first_imgMatt Phillips’ fortuitous goal on the stroke of half-time put the home side ahead at Loftus-Road, where Jack Robinson is making his QPR debut.Left-back Robinson, who was signed from Liverpool in the summer of 2014 and suffered a long-term knee injury last March while on loan at Huddersfield, had an encouraging first half. Both teams struggled to create chances before Phillips swung in a cross from the right towards Junior Hoilett. The Canadian failed to make contact and the ball crept into the net at the far post. The best opportunity before that fell to Rangers, but after James Perch collected Phillips’ clever pass and crossed from the right, Sebastian Polter was unable to apply the finishing touch.Troubled Charlton had another let-off when Tjaronn Chery’s left-wing free-kick ricocheted off Perch into the arms of keeper Nick Pope.At the other end, Alex Smithies pushed away a shot from Callum Harriott before Rod Fanni headed wide from Harriott’s free-kick.QPR: Smithies; Perch, Onuoha, Hall, Robinson; Henry, Luongo; Phillips, Chery, Hoilett; Polter.Subs: Ingram, Kpekawa, Faurlin, Petrasso, El Khayati, Gladwin, Washington.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

India downs a goliath China in Asia Cup Basketball

first_imgIndia is ranked 11th in the continent and 61st in the world in basketball. But that did not deter Indian cagers to stun favourites China 65-58 in a Group A game of the 5th FIBA Asia Cup basketball championship for a historic first-ever triumph over the world’s 12th-ranked nation at Wuhan.Pratham Singh and Amjyot Singh scored 13 points apiece, while pivotal player Vishesh Bhriguvanshi notched up 10 points as India led the continental giants by 15 points after the second quarter, according to FIBA Asia website. In head-to-head record, 15-time winners of the Asian Basketball Championship, China had won all their seven previous meetings in the FIBA ABC between the two rivals, by at least 30 points on each occasion, but this was the first time the two teams met in the FIBA Asia Cup. It was India’s first win in two games in the five-team group also comprising Asia no. 2 Iran, no. 7 Japan and no. 14 Indonesia.Coach Scott Fleming said it was a surprise to him why this, a victory over China, had not happened earlier.”In fact, I’m more surprised that this was the first win for India against China. Because we have a lot of potential and this should have happened much earlier, Flemming told FIBA Asia website. For me personally, this win was another game in this competition. We have lot more games to go. But for these guys (the players) it’s a great result for all the hard work they have put all these years,” the American said.advertisement”I’m so happy for these players. And I’m so happy for the country. I’ve coached for 32 years in the USA, and the only reason I came here win or lose was to make a difference in the lives of these players. There were a few questions asked when we won in January (the Lusofonia Games gold medal beating Angola). I think this win last night adds credibility to that earlier victory. With this win, we are no longer a team with just potential. We can also perform to prove it,” Fleming added.”Well, this is a young team. Such results are expected. They (India) really deserved the win because they certainly played better than us,” China coach Wang Huaiyu said.last_img read more
