11 October 2007Visitors to the Kruger Park have been urged to report any African wild dogs they come across to help the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) to improve the management of these animals.Between now and the end of November, one of the only viable wild dog populations left in the country can be spotted in the southern parts of the Kruger National Park.Researchers at the EWT are trying to determine how wild dogs are genetically related to each other so as to improve the management of their population.“Visitors can support this research by reporting all wild dog sightings to the EWT’s Wild Dog Hotline number,” said EWT chief executive officer Yolan Friedmann. “Sightings can be phoned in or SMS-ed to 076 725 5242.“This will enable researchers to locate dog packs and obtain the required number of genetic samples to complete the analysis.”The wild dog is South Africa’s most endangered large carnivore. There are fewer than 500 free-ranging wild dogs in the country, most of whom live in the Kruger Park, with a handful found at smaller provincial and private reserves.“Kruger National Park contains the only viable and self-sustaining wild dog population in South Africa,” Friedmann said. “They are therefore an important benchmark with which to compare other less viable and more intensively managed populations.”The wild dogs at the Kruger Park are, however, notoriously difficult to locate.If there is a sighting, as much detail as possible needs to be given on the location, time and size of the group to help the project researchers find the packs.Patterns of relatedness among the southern Kruger wild dog population will be compared to those of smaller populations in reserves like the Pilanesberg National Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and De Beers Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve.The research project is being sponsored by Masslift and Colchester Zoo’s Action for The Wild.Source: BuaNews

UStream, a deep-pocketed gamble on the future, really needs a better iPhone app. This new version looks a lot better; these changes are long overdue. This app looks like something I want to use to view and create live mobile video.The company put up a post on its blog this evening with screenshots and details of the launch, but pulled the post, probably because the app isn’t live yet in the iTunes store. None the less, you can see the screenshots and highlights of the new version below.For those of you with two phones in your pocket comparing apps across platforms, it appears that most if not all of these updates have been available in the UStream Android app for the past few months. Competition doesn’t sit still, either. Rumors emerged earlier this month that Apple’s MobileMe product might be remade as a Foursquare/UStream mashup of sorts. We’ll see. Given that the company has raised a fair sum of money and that live mobile video is supposed to be all the rage someday, ought UStream not have a little more than this up its sleeve for its first iPhone app update in months? Either way, I’m looking forward to it.Highlights from the pending UStream release include:Broadcasting and viewing will now finally be possible through the same single app. UStream previously offered live mobile broadcasting through one app (last updated in November) and viewing other peoples’ live shows through another (last updated in July). Now there will be just one app for both. It’s much more attractive than either the broadcaster or the viewer, too.Featured content and sorting by categories. It’s hard to find good content on the UStream app, but the screenshot of featured live and recorded shows indicates the company is set to overcome this major hurdle in making the app worth using. In testing the old app just minutes ago, I was able to view live chatter between astronauts climbing around on the outside of the space station – on my phone! I was also able to see a well-endowed woman disrobe in front of a radio microphone while voices from off-camera shouted in Spanish about Wikipedia. Both live broadcasts truly were marvels of the modern age. Featured content will be a big improvement though, presuming there’s enough good things to feature.Users can now log-in with Facebook or Twitter, in addition to their UStream accounts. That’s a very smart change.Broadcasters will now be able to run polls from the app.Subscribers can sign up for push notifications for channels or events of interest being broadcast live.Can changes like these help UStream move beyond the topless astronaut crowd? Time will tell, but they sure look like big improvements to me. I like the idea of being able to view and broadcast live video from my phone. If you hold unhealthy beliefs, beliefs that conflict with reality, you will not produce the results you want. In a contest between your beliefs and reality, reality remains undefeated. The following unhealthy beliefs about your prospects and clients will cause you no end of problems. If you want better results than you produce now, you start by changing your beliefs.They Are Never Going to Change Partners: If you believe your dream client is never going to change partners, you are not going to continue to pursue their business. Without persisting as long as is necessary to win their business, you will give up too soon, looking elsewhere for easier targets. Because you give up and go away, you will miss the opportunity to compete for your dream client’s business when they have the inevitable problems, challenges, or circumstances that give rise to change. Given a long enough timeline, every dream client who is locked in with a partner will change partners. You determine whether or not you are going to be there when they decide to look.They Won’t Meet with Salespeople: You might want to believe that your dream client contacts won’t meet with salespeople. In some ways, you are correct; they won’t meet with some salespeople. Mostly you are incorrect, and the contacts that refuse a meeting with you meet with other salespeople. Believing you are not the variable disempowers you, as is generally true when you look for external factors as the root cause of your problems. You increase your chances of acquiring a meeting when you improve the value proposition for the meeting and persist in your pursuit.They Won’t Pay More: It might be true that your prospective client won’t pay you more, but when that is true, it says nothing about their willingness to pay someone else more. No potential client is going to pay more if they don’t perceive an increase in value that would justify a more considerable investment. If you want them to make a more significant investment, you have to connect the dots for them, convincing them that the larger investment produces a result worthy of the additional money they spend. Just because price is always a factor doesn’t mean it is always the deciding factor. In most cases, it is not.They Know More Than You: The contacts inside your dream client companies certainly know more about their business than you do, but that does not evidence that they know more about the intersection of your industry vertical and their business than you. It is highly unlikely. Your contacts buy what you sell infrequently, and you sell it every day and to many different clients. Your situational knowledge and experience provide you with a deeper, more nuanced understanding of why they might change, how they need to change, and the choices and trade-offs they need to consider. The decision to be a subject matter expert is personal; you can decide to do the work to become one whenever you want.They Can Make the Decision by Themselves: In a small business, maybe. In a larger, more complex sale, doubtful. Your contacts to want to make decisions they can execute. They seek consensus internally because they want to make the right decision—and that they can and will execute. Your contact may not want to bring in other people from their team, and they may tell you as much, but that is no indication that other people aren’t going to weigh in on the decision—or stop the initiative in its tracks.They Can Resolve Their Own Concerns: At some point after providing your dream client with a presentation and a proposal, they will thank you for your time, tell you how much they valued your discussion and will get back with you after they discuss your plan with their team. They are sincere, and they have good intentions. However, once they are in a room, people start asking questions, some of which turn into concerns. You are not only the best person to resolve their concerns; you are also responsible for doing so. The problem is that you are not in the room.They Are Ready to Change: The fact that your dream client is finally choosing a new partner doesn’t mean they are ready to make the changes they need to on their side. Our strong desire to uncover our prospective client’s dissatisfaction with our competitor often prevents us from seeing how much of their challenge stems from their unwillingness to make the necessary changes on their side. Maybe they don’t want to change their processes, or perhaps they don’t want to make the required investment the better results require. They may be changing partners without changing what needs to change.If you want better results, you first have to change your beliefs. Once your beliefs change, your actions will follow. It takes time for new ideas, and new actions produce new and better results. Like anything else, you will be uncomfortable until you gain the experience and the competency required to create a better result.
The Calangute police in North coastal Goa on Tuesday arrested a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan, Rajvir Prabhudayal Singh, for outraging the modesty of a woman.Jivba Dalvi, Police Inspector-in-charge of Calangute police station, said that a complaint was received from a lady from Mumbai who was sea-bathing along with her husband and kids at Calangute beach on Tuesday at around 4 p.m. Mr. Singh, who was also sea-bathing nearby, approached the lady, allegedly touched her inappropriately and abused her with vulgar words, thereby outraging her modesty.Further, when the lady’s husband questioned the accused, Mr. Singh assaulted him with fist blows.The police registered an offence Under Section 354-A, 323 of the Indian Penal Code and during the investigation the accused was arrested.During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused, 43, from Dhimwali in Rajasthan, is posted as a Hawaldar in the CRPF and is currently deployed at Recruit Training Centre in Madhya Pradesh, police said.
