Whether Radmanovic’s injury emboldens the Lakers to make a move before Thursday’s trading deadline remains to be seen. “It doesn’t really affect a whole lot,” Kupchak said. “I think of more concern right now is where we are with Luke because he was close to returning before the break. With Luke back, I think we’re versatile enough to make it through the end of the season.” Kupchak said he wouldn’t look to add a forward, but said of the overall picture: “Does it increase the urgency as far as making a deal? I don’t know. We have a pretty good idea of what we want to do if we can do it.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Radmanovic underwent an MRI and CT scan Monday that confirmed the separated shoulder, the team said. The timing couldn’t be worse for the Lakers, who already were without two injured starters in Walton and Kwame Brown, and need a victory Wednesday against Portland to avoid the first six-game losing streak of Phil Jackson’s coaching career. The Lakers couldn’t even make it out of the All-Star break unscathed as forward Vladimir Radmanovic suffered a separated right shoulder when he fell on a patch of ice in Park City, Utah, on Saturday. Radmanovic, who was starting in place of the injured Luke Walton, is expected to miss approximately eight weeks, a timetable that would cost him more than 25 games and keep him out until the final week of the regular season. “It seems like we’ve had at least our fair share (of injuries),” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said. “It’s something that all teams go through. Maybe we’ve had a little bit of an extra dose. But there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s part of the equation.” The Lakers are hopeful that Walton will be able to return from his sprained right ankle in the coming week, with team spokesman John Black saying Walton made “slight progress” this weekend and might try to practice today as the team reconvenes.
Well known community activist Martin McDermott has announced his intention to run in next year’s local elections for Fianna Fáil in Inisowen. The son of Mary and John McDermott, he has played a significant role in local community activities over the years and has led successful fundraising initiatives for national and local projects including the RNLI and Glengad football club. Most recently, Martin played a leading role in a campaign to save the Malin Head Coastguard Station and to preserve teacher ratios in local DEIS schools. His steadfast commitment to local community work and volunteering includes a passion for Glengad Football Club, Community Centre and Youth Club and he organises the annual Glengad Community Clean Up.Martin is the youngest of a family of 10 and has been married to Sheila for the past 12 years. He believes that his participation in a variety of activities across the Peninsula give him a solid grounding in the real issues impacting on people at present.Martin says “I am delighted and humbled to be put forward as candidate for my local party convention. I recently had the privilege of watching modular homes be built in a factory and then installed on the job site, and I must say, I came away pretty impressed. These are two homes that when complete will be LEED certified, as well as meet the requirements for EarthCraft House and the new NAHB Green Building Program.Modular homes, also known as “systems built,” are a far cry from the old mobile home that was rolled to the site and finished with an aluminum skirt (and a couple of pink flamingos, for good measure). While each component of a modern modular home is roughly the size of a mobile home, they are assembled onsite into medium to large homes that to all but the most knowledgeable visitor look no different than a stick built home. While the details vary among manufacturers and specific models, the basic idea is the same: Homes are built in sections, finished between 50% and 70% inside and out, shipped to the job, installed on a foundation, and completed in the field. The homes I saw came out framed, insulated, wired, plumbed, and drywalled, with interior doors and most of the trim installed, and they were primed, too—ready for the finish coat of paint. In the field, the builders install drywall to cover the joints between boxes, install flooring, roofing, siding, and a few other details, and the house is done.I understand the costs are similar to a site-built home, but the construction schedule is compressed by one-half to two-thirds, reducing carrying costs. The quality control is very good, due to the fact that most of the work is done in a factory setting (with no weather or temperature issues).I have to admit that I was skeptical, and I think that there is certainly room for improvement in the process, but overall, this system has won me over. I would seriously consider building a modular home for myself.
