The team has its third coach in three years, but the players are largely the same and expectations are high once again.The Lady Crusaders had their first game action Saturday morning in Winfield. They lost their first match to Wichita Trinity 23-25, 28-26, 23-25, but then rebounded for two wins. The girls beat Conway Springs 25-16, 25-19, and then beat Buhler 25-17, 20-25, 25-17. Wellington would lose to El Dorado in a tough three-game set before beating Winfield 25-20, 25-13 and Ark City 25-13, 25-17.Â New coach Brianna Stephenson was happy with the early effort. She is new to the head coaching role but has been an assistant at the school for six years, so there is a lot of familiarity between her and the team members.Jill Wiley and Erin Goodrum at Winfield Tournament.The team lost only one starter from last year, and two seniors. Returning seniors include Siarah Walker, McKenna Oathout, Abby Goodrum, Erin Goodrum and Mariah Moore. Those players have been playing together for several years now.Junior Tayland French has also been a starter at times and returns. Other juniors who will see a lot of playing time are Kiera Hills, Shayland French and sophomore Jill Wiley. Tatum Haskins and Brecken Lawrence are in backup roles.Stephenson said she hopes the team will do even better this year. Last year the season ended too soon in a substate loss to Mulvane. They hope to go further this year. Then coach Alison Widen had her baby the night before that game, and that had an impact.The team has a strong front row of hitters in the Abby and Erin Goodrum, Walker, Moore and Oathout. Setters are also playing well.Stephenson added that passing and setting up shots take some time, but they are improving each day.â€œWe are getting better at communicating, talking to each other and trusting each other,â€ she said. â€œWe need to play together as a unit and stay positive.â€The team is set to play at Rose Hill next Tuesday, with Rose Hill and Winfield in a triangular meeting.The first home match will be Sept. 15 with Clearwater and Mulvane.Follow us on Twitter.
