Equifax to update Canadians this week still mum on number impacted by

first_imgTORONTO – Equifax Canada said Monday it plans to provide an update this week on the impact of its massive data breach — nearly two months after it was first discovered — but would not say how many individuals north of the border may have had their personal information compromised.The credit data company told The Canadian Press that it is working with Canada’s privacy watchdog, which announced an investigation into the cyberattack on Friday.“We intend to share an update with Canadians this week that will include how we intend to notify any potentially impacted individuals,” an Equifax Canada spokesperson said in an email. “Our investigation is ongoing and we are committed to sharing an update with Canadian consumers.”Canada’s privacy commissioner said Friday that Equifax has committed to contacting Canadians whose data may be at risk, in writing, as soon as possible, and to provide them with free credit monitoring, a service that was offered to U.S. residents on Sept. 7, the day it first announced the data breach.The company is now facing investigations in both Canada and the U.S., but lawyers say the punitive threat by regulators is stronger south of the border.Equifax, which collects data about consumers’ credit histories and provides credit checks to a variety of companies, has been tight-lipped about the security issue’s impact in Canada.Equifax Canada did not respond to questions about the number of Canadians who may have had their personal information stolen or whether the potential fallout is limited to Canadians with credit files in the U.S.The credit monitoring company’s call centre staff have told callers that only Canadians that have dealings in the U.S. were likely to be impacted by the data breach. However, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner said on Friday that, at this point, it is not clear that the affected data was limited to those Canadians.Equifax said on Sept. 7 that it suffered a massive cyberattack in the summer that may have compromised the personal data of 143 million Americans and an undisclosed number of Canadian and U.K. residents.The credit data company has since said that fewer than 400,000 U.K. individuals may have been affected in the hack that was discovered on July 29.Equifax’s Canadian website says that the personal information that may have been breached includes names, addresses and social insurance numbers.The Federal Trade Commission in the U.S. can issue hefty fines if the credit monitoring company is found to have failed to do enough to protect consumers’ data, but Canada’s privacy watchdog does not have the power to hand down fines, said Toronto-based cybersecurity and privacy lawyer Lyndsay Wasser of McMillan LLP.Instead, the privacy commissioner can make non-binding recommendations and sign an agreement urging them to comply, she added.Tamir Israel, a staff lawyer with the Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic in Ottawa, pointed to the hacking of Canadian affair-seeking website Ashley Madison, which paid $1.6 million US to settle with the FTC but was not fined in Canada.However, Wasser said an application could also be made to a federal court — either by the privacy commissioner or by an individual — for a process in which a judge could award damages to those who have suffered as a result of a data breach.The company could also face punitive measures via class actions. At least two proposed class actions have been filed in Canada against Equifax in connection with the data breach.Under Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, personal information should be protected by security safeguards that are appropriate for the sensitivity of the information, Wasser added.However, Canada’s privacy laws do not specify the measures that must be taken and even when a company has been hacked, it may still pass the “reasonableness test,” she said.“That’s the million dollar question: What is reasonable?… Even if they did comply with industry standards, it could still be found that further precaution should have been taken,” Wasser said.On Friday, Equifax said in a statement that the cyberattack occurred through a vulnerability in an open-source application framework it uses called Apache Struts. The United States Computer Readiness team detected and disclosed the vulnerability in March, and Equifax “took efforts to identify and to patch any vulnerable systems in the company’s IT infrastructure.”Meanwhile, changes to PIPEDA that would require companies to notify people in the event of a serious data breach are in the final stages, with the proposed text of the regulations out for public consultation until Oct. 2. But until those come into force, Alberta is the only province in Canada that has mandatory reporting requirements for private-sector companies.Israel said federal breach notification laws are “critical.”“There is going to be a strong internal incentive to make sure you have a very complete PR strategy before you start telling people what’s going on, but people need to know right away.”Note to readers: This is a corrected story. Inspector warned duck boat company of design flaws last year

first_imgA private inspector said Saturday that he warned the company operating duck boats on a Missouri lake about design flaws putting the watercraft at greater risk of sinking, less than a year before the accident that killed 17 people during a sudden storm.Steve Paul, owner of the Test Drive Technologies inspection service in the St. Louis area, said he issued a written report for the company in August 2017. It explained why the boats’ engines — and pumps that remove water from their hulls — might fail in inclement weather.He also told The Associated Press that the tourist boats’ canopies make them hard to escape when they sink — a concern raised by regulators after a similar sinking in Arkansas killed 13 people in 1999.The accident Thursday evening on Table Rock Lake outside the tourist town of Branson also is raising questions about whether storm warnings in the area went unheeded and whether any agency can keep boaters off the water when inclement weather approaches.“If you have the information that you could have rough waters or a storm coming, why ever put a boat on that water?” Paul said.A witness’ video of the duck boat just before it capsized suggests that its flexible plastic windows might have been closed and could have trapped passengers as the hybrid boat-truck went down. It does not show passengers jumping clear.“The biggest problem with a duck when it sinks is that canopy,” Paul said. “That canopy becomes what I’ll call a people catcher, and people can’t get out from under that canopy.”A spokeswoman for Ripley Entertainment, the company operating the duck boats in Branson, did not respond Saturday to telephone and email messages seeking comment. Spokeswoman Suzanne Smagala has noted that Thursday’s accident was the only one in more than 40 years of operation.An archived version of Ripley’s website said it operates 20 duck boats in Branson and described them as “built from the ground up under United States Coast Guard (USCG) supervision with the latest in marine safety.”In central Wisconsin, Original Wisconsin Ducks in the Dells has no plans to change how it operates after 73 years of safe rides, general manager Dan Gavinski said. But his company operates World War II-vintage boats, not the modified modern version.Since 1999, duck boats have been linked to the deaths of more than 40 people, with a troubled safety record on the road and water alike. Their height can obscure cars, pedestrians or bicycles from a driver’s view, and maintenance problems can be severe.Paul said he won’t know until the boat that sank is recovered from the lake whether it’s one of the two dozen he inspected for Ripley Entertainment in August 2017.The U.S. Coast Guard said the boat that sank was built in 1944 and had passed an inspection in February, The Kansas City Star reported . But Paul said the boat would have been heavily modified to make it longer so that only part of it dates to World War II. He said it would still have the design flaw he identified in his report.He declined to share a copy of his report with The Associated Press but said he said he is willing to make it available to authorities.“I’m sure eventually it will be subpoenaed,” he said.Paul said the duck boats he inspected — which the company had just purchased or repaired — vented exhaust from the motor out front and below the water line. He said in rough conditions, water could get into the exhaust system, and then into the motor, cutting it off. With the motor off, he said, its pump for removing water from the hull would not operate.“If you watch that video, that water is definitely being slammed up into that exhaust without a doubt,” Paul said.After the deadly sinking in Arkansas in 1999, the National Transportation Safety Board recommended doing away with the canopies and adding more floatation capacity so duck boats could remain upright and keep floating even if they took on water.The industry took little heed, said Robert Mongeluzzi, a Philadelphia attorney who has represented victims of duck boat crashes. The canopies can protect customers from rain or sun, he noted, and closed windows allow companies to heat the cabins, extending operating hours.The NTSB called the industry’s response to the recommendations disappointing, saying companies cited the cost of engineering and installing additional flotation capacity as prohibitive.“The duck boat is notoriously unstable and unsuited for what they were attempting to do with it,” said Daniel Rose, an attorney whose New York-based law firm has represented victims in several accidents. “It tries to be a boat and a car and does neither, really, except under ideal circumstances.”State officials said the Coast Guard regulates such craft; its officials did not immediately respond to requests for more information. Spokesmen said the Department of Transportation doesn’t regulate duck boats because they’re amphibious, and the Department of Public Safety doesn’t in this case because it’s a commercial vessel, as opposed to a recreational one.It’s also not clear that any agency had the authority to keep boats off the lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built it in the late 1950s, but its officials said they don’t have such authority.Witnesses have said the weather appeared calm before a storm suddenly whipped up strong waves and spray.But nearly eight hours earlier, the National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the western and central Missouri counties.A severe thunderstorm warning that went out at 6:32 p.m. specifically mentioned Table Rock Lake. The first emergency calls over the accident occurred just after 7 p.m.Meteorologist Elisa Raffa of KOLR-TV in Springfield said in a phone interview Saturday that her station was forecasting the threat of severe weather all morning.“This storm didn’t come out of nowhere,” she said. “That is what pains me. Province to help fund homeless count in Fort St John

first_imgThe homeless count will occur over a span of 24 hours, beginning the night before April 18th and will include counts in shelters, RCMP holding cells, hospitals, and other known places where at-risk individuals stay overnight. During the day, the same procedure will occur; with mechanisms in place to avoid duplicating persons who have been counted already.Each person that is counted will be asked to complete a survey about their living situation to highlight needs for at-risk individuals, which can give feedback on potential future funding to help combat homelessness. The survey’s full results should be publicly available several months after the count is completed.The Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society is currently searching for volunteers to help with this year’s homeless count. Each volunteer must be available the day of the count, and for a training session that is taking place the evening of Tuesday, April 10th. A survey has been created to identify the commitments of each volunteer best and can be found at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FSJ2018.The Province is investing $550,000 to fund the counts in the 12 communities and plans to report on the preliminary results by early summer. The Homelessness Action Plan is expected to be released later this year. FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The Province will coordinate homeless counts in up to 12 communities around B.C. including here in Fort St. John.The Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society announced earlier this month; they would take on coordinate Fort St. John’s first-ever homeless count.Homeless counts provide vital information, including the demographics and service needs of people experiencing homelessness. Virtual SIMs used in Pulwama terror attack India to seek US help

first_imgSrinagar: A request would be sent to the US to seek details from a service provider of “virtual SIMs”, which were used by the JeM suicide bomber behind the Pulwama attack and his Pakistan and Kashmir-based handlers, officials said.Piecing together probe from the site of the terror strike, searches carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir police and central security agencies at an encounter site in Tral as well as other locations, it was found that the bomber, Adil Dar, was in constant touch with the JeM across the border, they said. Forty CRPF personnel were killed on February 14 when Dar rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into a paramilitary force bus at Pulwama in South Kashmir. India retaliated after the strike by bombing the Jaish terror group’s hideout in Balakot in Pakistan. It was a fairly new modus operandi where terrorists across the border were using a “virtual SIM”, generated by a service provider in the United States. In this technology, the computer generates a telephone number and the user downloads an application of the service provider on their smartphone. The number is linked to social networking sites like WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram or Twitter. The verification code generated by these networking sites is received on the smartphone and the user is ready. In case of Pulwama, Dar was in constant touch with the Jaish handler as well as Mudassir Khan using the same technology, the officials said. The request to the US will include details of phone numbers that got in touch with the “Virtual SIM” and who had activated it, they said, adding that Internet Protocol addresses would also be sought. While the security agencies would attempt to find who had paid for the virtual SIM, they were also aware that the terror groups used forged identities, as was done during the the Mumbai 26/11 terror strikes. During investigation of the 26/11 attacks it was found that an amount of USD 229 was wired to Callphonex, via Western Union Money Transfer receipt number 8364307716-0, for activating the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) used during the strikes.last_img read more

Pryor rescues sloppy Buckeyes with fourthdown scramble in victory over Hawkeyes

Terrelle Pryor admitted he doesn’t have the most talent or the glitziest numbers. But he proved Saturday he can make plays when it counts. The junior quarterback rallied Ohio State (10-1, 6-1) to a fourth-quarter comeback to escape Iowa City, Iowa, with a 20-17 victory and keep the Buckeyes in the hunt for their sixth straight conference title. “I might not be the best quarterback or have the best stats,” Pryor said, “but I guarantee I can bring my team back and make them believe that we were coming back.” It wasn’t pretty. Pryor scrambled for 14 yards to convert a fourth-and-10 at midfield to revive a game-winning drive that was on life support. Five plays later, running back Dan “Boom” Herron punched in a 2-yard touchdown to cap the 12-play, 76-yard march and give OSU a 20-17 lead with 1:47 remaining. “Our guys don’t panic,” coach Jim Tressel said. “They believe and keep fighting. We felt like it was going to be a four-quarter heavyweight bout.” Herron rushed for 69 yards on 20 carries. The junior has scored at least one touchdown in 10 consecutive games. Iowa’s final crack at tying or winning the game was short-lived. Defensive lineman Cameron Heyward sacked quarterback Ricky Stanzi to force the Hawkeyes into a fourth-and-22, which they couldn’t convert. “I think we knew we really needed a stop,” Heyward said. “The defensive line just took that personally and went out there and played.” Pryor raved all week about OSU’s offensive game plan for Iowa, but aside from the go-ahead series, the Buckeyes struggled to muster up any sort of offensive rhythm. The junior signal-caller tossed a pair of costly interceptions, and officials flagged the Buckeyes eight times for 73 yards, including three false start penalties. “Throughout the game, a lot of things were going on,” Pryor said. “A lot of dropped passes, a lot of bad throws, a lot of inaccurate throws. We lived for another day.” Pryor’s miscues nearly cost OSU the game. Facing third-and-10 with the score tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter, Pryor, looking for receiver Dane Sanzenbacher, threw into double coverage off his back foot. Iowa’s Shaun Prater collected the errant throw after a deflection, returning the pick eight yards to the OSU 27-yard line. The pick “was kind of B.S.,” Pryor said. “It kind of bounced off Dane and bounced up. They made a great play on that.” Two plays later, running back Marcus Coker scored the first touchdown of his career from one yard out to provide Iowa a 17-10 edge. Coker totaled 70 yards on nine carries as he started in place of Adam Robinson, whom Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz benched for the first quarter for what he called “academic indigestions.” “He didn’t do anything wrong, illegal or what have you,” Ferentz said. “But just not dotting the ‘I’s and crossing the ‘T’s.” Robinson, who gained 27 yards on nine carries, left the game on Iowa’s final drive after taking a brutal hit from OSU safety Jermale Hines. One play before Pryor rescued the Buckeyes on fourth down, receiver DeVier Posey, all alone in the end zone, let a downfield heave fall through his fingers. He strutted back to the huddle, hands on his helmet, shaking his head. “Was I pissed? Yeah, I was mad,” Pryor said. “But we had a fourth-and-10 to get to or we were going to lose another game. I hate losing with a passion.” Pryor atoned for Posey’s drop and his own mistakes on the next play, as Tressel opted against punting on fourth down from midfield with more than four minutes left. Following the play, Pryor pleaded his case with Tressel and quarterbacks coach Nick Siciliano, insisting that the turnover wasn’t his fault. “He was probably upset about the fact he threw an interception,” Tressel said. “But in the heat of a game when you’re screaming and yelling at each other, there’s no place for the meek and mild. You need to be screamed at and you need to scream. “I don’t know if I was screaming at him or if he was screaming at me or if we were screaming at each other, but we still love each other.” Pryor completed 18 of his 33 pass attempts for 195 yards. He found backup tight end Reid Fragel for a 5-yard touchdown to cap a 12-play, 77-yard drive to start the second half and turn a 7-3 deficit into a 10-7 advantage. The score was the first of Fragel’s career. Iowa responded with a 10-play, 65-yard march of its own, which culminated in a 31-yard field goal to tie the game. Last season, the teams also entered the fourth quarter knotted at 10-10. Firefighters Helicopters Working On New Fire Outside Sterling

first_imgThis helicopter was diverted back when winds kicked up activity on the Swan Lake Fire burning in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, according to DOF officials. Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Firefighters and helicopters are aggressively working on a half-acre fire burning southwest of the confluence of Killey and Kenai rivers. It was reported at 3:20pm, Sunday by firefighter personnel aboard an aircraft guiding water-scooping airplanes flying between Skilak Lake and the Swan Lake Fire. In a release from DOF, they are busy cutting in a saw line around the fire that is burning in heavy dead and downed trees from the 2014 Funny River Fire. Two helicopters were dropping large buckets of water on the fire, including one that was pulled from the nearby Swan Lake Fire. The Killey Fire is burning in a full protection area east of Browns Lake and to the west of the Killey River near Sterling.  A Division of Forestry Kenai – Kodiak Area helitack crew with four firefighters responded and three other Division of Forestry firefighters traveled by four wheelers to reach the fire. Firefighters reported the fire is burning deep underneath surface layers and was proving to be resistant to suppression. Eleanor died on December 24, 2012 at the age of 89 and Leo died on October 20, 2018 at the age of 99. Both passed away in Palm Harbor, FL where they had enjoyed their retirement years, after raising their family in Wilmington for most of their lives.They are survived and will be deeply missed by their children, Paul, Bob and Jane Theriault, and their grandchildren, Ashley, Scott, Virigina and West.At the family’s request, there are no calling hours.Relatives and friends were invited to their graveside prayer service of Saturday, April 27th at 11 a.m. at the Calvary Cemetery 686 Washington St, Winchester, MA 01890.Leo P. To nab drugs US border agents turn to drivethrough Xray scanners

first_img3:54 10 “The size of a few grains of salt of fentanyl, which is a dangerous opioid, can kill a person very quickly,” Michael Humphries, CBP’s Nogales port director, said during a press conference at the time. “We’ll use all our resources to prevent the entry of dangerous narcotics into the United States — our officers, our technology, our canines and everything we can to throw back at them.”President Donald Trump says a physical border wall is necessary to stop the flow of drugs into the US. But data from CBP paints a different picture, showing that the majority of narcotics make their way into the country through ports of entry. In 2018, for example, 90% of heroin, 88% of cocaine, 87% of methamphetamine and 80% of fentanyl seized by officials was smuggled through legal crossings. They also have smaller machines, similar to those that luggage goes through at the airport, and portable handheld X-ray devices that can target specific areas on a vehicle. Some worry how exposure to the X-rays will affect people’s health as they drive their vehicles through the machines. X-ray radiation is known to cause cancer and contribute to other health risks. The CBP says the machines’ radiation is “low” and that it would take 2,000 exposures to equal one hospital chest X-ray.In all, a CBP spokesman told CNET, the agency has more than 300 drive-through scanners, 3,500 small-scale X-ray machines and 35,000 handheld devices deployed at US ports of entry. In the 2019 federal budget, CBP received an extra $520 million for additional nonintrusive inspection technology at land border ports of entry. “The focus is not just to replace aging systems,” Robert Perez, deputy commissioner of CBP, said before the House Committee on Homeland Security on May 9, “but to transform port operations in order to expertly facilitate legitimate travel and trade, while successfully interdicting deadly fentanyl and other contraband.”The Drug Enforcement Agency, which is tasked with combating drug smuggling, declined to comment on its investigative techniques.Scaling upWhen the driver of the tractor trailer full of cucumbers slowly passed through the X-ray machine, his vehicle was hit from the top and on both sides with a type of imaging called backscatter. The machine then likely showed agents a series of black-and-white images of the truck that highlighted metallic and organic material, such as drugs.That 649 pounds of fentanyl and methamphetamine hidden in the trailer’s false floor probably lit up the images in bright white.CBP has been using drive-through X-ray machines since 2008. The first machine, called a Z Portal, was set up in San Ysidro, California, which is the busiest land port of entry in the Western Hemisphere, according to the federal government. CBP has since put the scanners all along the southwest border. These new tools help the agency more easily inspect “smaller confined spaces to view inside fuel tanks and small compartments, behind walls of conveyances, and identify false walls in containers.” CBP awarded a $28.8 million contract last October to Viken Detection, which makes a handheld X-ray device called the HBI-120. Like the drive-through machines, these scanners also use backscatter imaging. Local law enforcement agencies and drug task forces have been using these handheld scanners for about a year.Before X-ray imaging, officers would have to rip out door panels and dashboards and search tire wells if they were suspicious of a vehicle. When the large-scale X-ray machines came on the scene, they were powerful enough to see through a vehicle’s thick steel exterior. But it wasn’t until the past couple of years that smaller devices could handle this type of imaging. These officers had a screwdriver or canine unit to try to find stuff, and now they’re literally finding things in minutes. AS&E A large tractor trailer filled with cucumbers pulled up to the Nogales border crossing in Arizona in January. The busy port of entry on the US-Mexico border sees more than 1,500 trucks pass through it daily, but something about this specific trailer made local officials suspicious.Rather than waving the truck through, US Customs and Border Protection officers had a trained dog sniff around it and ran the vehicle through a room-size X-ray machine. What they saw in the grainy black-and-white X-ray images was jaw-dropping.It turned out to be the largest stash of the synthetic opioid fentanyl ever seized in CBP history. Underneath those cucumbers, in a false floor in the rear of the trailer, was nearly 254 pounds of fentanyl and 395 pounds of methamphetamine — with a street value of about $4.6 million. Both the CBP spokesman and Ryan said the government is stepping up large-scale X-ray imaging of vehicles at the border. Indian companies likely to give 106 salary hike in 2016 says Towers

Factoring inflation at 6.1%, the net salary increase in 2016 is expected to be marginally higher at 4.7% as against 4.5% last year, when inflation was at 5.9%,” said Nasdaq-listed professional services firm Towers Watson.The expected salary hike would come about despite a bearish mood among nearly 58% of the Indian companies about their business growth, Towers Watson said in its report titled “2015-16 Asia-Pacific Salary Budget Planning Report.””Employers may be bearish in thinking there is a weak business outlook given the current poor market data, but the case is the opposite for employees, who hold bullish expectations for salary rises. UNICEF appeals for 761m for Rohingya children

first_imgUNICEF is launching a US$76.1 million appeal for its emergency humanitarian response to the Rohingya refugee crisis in Bangladesh.The appeal will cover immediate needs of newly-arrived Rohingya children, as well as those who arrived before the recent influx, and children from vulnerable host communities.Such number, according to a UNICEF news release, is 720,000 children in all.Up to 60 per cent of the 500,000-plus Rohingya who have fled Myanmar since 25 August are estimated to be children, said the UNICEF.Most are now living in harsh and insanitary conditions in makeshift camps and settlements spread across the district of Cox’s Bazar, observed the global body.“Desperate, traumatised children and their families are fleeing the violence in Myanmar every day. We are scaling up our response as fast as we can, but the magnitude of need is immense and we must be able do more to help them,” said UNICEF executive director Anthony Lake, who is visiting Cox’s Bazar.“These children are being denied a childhood. They need our help now and they need our help to have a future.”Expanding the provision of safe water, sanitation and improved hygiene for Rohingya children is the overriding priority of the appeal, amid concerns over a possible outbreak of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases, according to the UNICEF.It said the majority of Rohingya children are not fully immunised against diseases such as polio.An earlier UNICEF appeal for US$7 million has been expanded to reflect the fast-growing scale of the crisis.last_img read more

File PhotoRuling Bangladesh Awami League (AL) ministers, parliamentarians, leaders and their relatives are largely responsible for the chaotic situation prevailing in the public transport sector, bus owners and experienced drivers say.The situation has worsened after the officials of law enforcement agencies started doing business in the sector buying buses and minibuses in the name of other persons, they claimed.The ruling party leaders and their relatives control the bus owners and workers’ associations in the capital, which restricts the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and law enforcement agencies to take effective actions against the vehicles without fitness and route permit, and the drivers who drive recklessly, they say.There is no more rule of law in the roads, they observed.The chaotic situation of the transport sector came to the fore after school and college students began a demonstration demanding punishment to those responsible for 29 July accident on Dhaka airport road, which killed two of their fellows, and resignation of the shipping minister for his comments on the accident.Abdul Karim Rajib and Dia Khanam Mim, class XII and XI students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College, were killed on the spot after an Uttara-bound bus of ‘Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan’ lost control and ran over the students standing beside the road around 12:00 noon.Shipping minister Shahjahan Khan’s brother-in-law Syed Nurul Haque alias Nannu was one of the directors of Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus service. He, however, told Prothom Alo that he is no longer involved with the company and sold his buses three years ago.Shahjahan Khan is the president of Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation. Some 70 buses of Kanak Paribahan, owned by his brother Hafizur Rahman, operate in three routes in the capital.The minister encourages the transport workers to stage demonstrations whenever citizens demand safety on roads or courts take action against reckless driving. He advised the workers from a meeting at his home to enforce strike after a court handed down death sentence to a driver and lifetime imprisonment to another one in February 2017.Bangladesh Road Transport Samity president and state minister for cooperatives Mashiur Rahman Ranga was also present in the meeting.Shipping minister, however, on Wednesday told Prothom Alo that slowly the transport sector is being disciplined and the number of road accidents is waning as he is in leadership.Another influential person of this sector is Dhaka Road Transport Owners Association general secretary Khandaker Enayet Ullah, a vice-president of AL’s Dhaka north unit.Mentioning that he is in the business for the last 35 years, he said, there is no such law in Bangladesh that bars people from a certain profession to do politics here.AL MPs Pankaj Nath, AKM Shamim Osman and two former MPs Shahida Tarekh Dipti and Ashrafunnesa Mosharraf (Swapna Services) are also involved in the transport business.Swechhsebak League general secretary Pankaj Nath-owned bus service company ‘Bihanga Paribahan’ began its journey in 2009. The transport committee of the government gave permission to 240 buses of Bihanga Paribahan to operate on five routes in and around the capital.Shamim Osman’s bus service company is ZN Corporation. Some 50 AC buses of this company were permitted to operate between Dhaka’s Gulistan and Narayanganj.Besides, MPs’ family members, Dhaka city Awami League leaders and associate bodies of the ruling party, Dhaka city corporations’ councillors are also involved in the business.Officials of the government and law enforcement agencies are also found to be involved in the business. Relatives of a few high officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) do the business jointly with several companies. Several persons of a certain district have opened public transport companies in the last few years.Most of these ministers, MPs, and influential persons have become owners of bus companies after the Awami League came to power in 2009. Earlier, ministers and MPs, including public works minister Mirza Abbas, of BNP-Jamaat alliance government used to do the business.Dhaka (north) metropolitan unit Juba League, youth wing of Awami League, president Mainul Hossain Khan alias Nikhil is the chairman of Chalan Paribahan. Writing Patterns on Carbon Nanotubes With Polymer Chains

Plumbing Carbon Nanotubes Now, as reported in a recent edition of Nature Nanotechnology, a research group has successfully used polymers to create well defined patterns onto single-walled carbon nanotubes.“Very few reports have address periodic patterning on nanotubes, and those studies that have been conducted resulted in patterns that were poorly repeating rather than nicely periodic and uniform,” said the study’s corresponding researcher, Christopher Li of Drexel University, to PhysOrg.com. “The success of our work appears to be in the polymer material we used.”The group chose a block copolymer, a polymer chain formed by two (or more, in some cases) short polymer chains. In this case the two components are polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene oxide (PEO).Li and colleagues at Drexel deposited a single-walled carbon nanotube solution onto a pre-fabricated carbon-coated grid. The nanotubes lined up on the grid surface and the group decorated the nanotubes with a solution containing the copolymer. The result is a copolymer/nanotube hybrid, which the group analyzed using a transmission electron microscope.Even with the powerful microscope, the nanotubes were not visible under the copolymers, which formed worm-like structures with alternating dark and bright stripes (corresponding to the PEO and PE blocks, respectively). But the consistent spatial orientation of the stripes, and the size of the “worms,” averaging 50 nanometers wide and one micrometer long, indicate that the polymer chains forming the stripes had aligned with the long axes of the nanotubes; the stripes, then, cut across the nanotubes perpendicularly.The researchers used copolymer solutions of varying concentrations and found that the stronger the solution, the more stripes formed on each nanotube. The process causing this to occur, they propose, begins when the copolymer molecules randomly adsorb onto a nanotube surface. These molecule clusters nucleate the growth of crystals and, with increasing concentration, more crystals appear, growing into larger patches.At a critical concentration the patches connect and clear stripes begin to form. And when the concentration is too high, there are so many crystals forming on the nanotubes that they don’t have time to align properly.The period of the stripe pattern – that is, the distance between alternating stripes – is about 12 nanometers. This regularity is a key step toward fabricating multiple transistors on individual nanotubes.Additionally, the group was able to attach gold nanoparticles to the copolymer/nanotube hybrid structures in fixed locations, adding another functional element to the pattern. Mitra lashes out at Centre for attempting to control Finance Commissions Terms

This comes when there would be a loss of Rs 35,849 crore for Bengal, if the 2011 census is used as TOR of the Finance Commission.He was speaking in the state Assembly on Tuesday, during discussion over deprivation by the Centre in allocation of funds to the state government.
