…Trelawny Stadium in Jamaica to host two regional four-day matches after 11-year breakCRICKET West Indies (CWI) has scheduled the fifth-round match between Jamaica Scorpions and Leeward Islands Hurricanes from February 13 to 16 at the venue, along with the sixth-round match between the Scorpions and Guyana Jaguars from February 27 to March 1.CWI director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, said the stadium is scheduled to stage a Twenty20 International in two years’ time and this was part of the process to get the ground in shape.“It will be good to see the Trelawny Stadium hosting regional cricket again after so many years with this effort from the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA)to build its capacity in western Jamaica,” said Adams.Only one West Indies Championship match has been played at the ground in the past, when current West Indies team operations manager Rawl Lewis led Windward Islands to a three-wicket victory over Jamaica in 2009.The ground has staged five other first-class matches – two involving international teams touring the Caribbean, and three involving West Indies A and counterparts from Sri Lanka and England. The stadium was completed in 2007 before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 West Indies and can seat 25,000.Adams said he was excited about the forthcoming West Indies Championship season and working with the new West Indies senior selection panel – under chairman Roger Harper – to identify the next wave of players to stake their claims for the West Indies Test team.“A new season is always an occasion for optimism as we expect performances from both established and rookie players within the system,” said Adams.“I’m sure the new Selection Panel under Roger Harper will be keen to cast their eyes over this competition which will wrap up our 2019-20 cricket season.”Guyana Jaguars are the five-time, defending champions of the Championship. They open the tournament on the road, when they travel to Antigua to face Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in a day/night contest played with a pink ball. The Championship marks a decade since CWI were the first member of the ICC, cricket’s world governing body, to play a pink-ball match in its first-class competition, when Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago played from January 15 to 18, 2010.Pink-ball matches have now become a standard part of the Championship and each team will play two of these games – home and away – under the tournament format. The other first round matches feature: Trinidad & Tobago Red Force battling Scorpions at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, and Windward Islands Volcanoes tackling Barbados Pride at the Arnos Vale Cricket Ground in St. Vincent.MATCH SCHEDULE(Play in all matches start at 10 am daily, except where indicated)ROUND 1January 9 to 12Hurricanes vs Jaguars – Vivian Richards Cricket Ground, Antigua (2 pm daily)Red Force vs Scorpions – Brian Lara Cricket Academy, TrinidadVolcanoes vs Pride – Arnos Vale Cricket Ground, St. VincentROUND 2January 16 to 19Scorpions vs Volcanoes – Sabina Park, JamaicaPride vs Jaguars – Kensington Oval, BarbadosRed Force vs Hurricanes – Brian Lara Cricket AcademyROUND 3January 23 to 26Jaguars vs Red Force – Guyana National Stadium, Guyana (9:30 am daily)Scorpions vs Pride – Sabina ParkVolcanoes vs Hurricanes – Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, St. Lucia (2 pm daily)***BREAK***Round 4February 6 to 9Jaguars vs Scorpions – Guyana National StadiumHurricanes vs Pride – Warner Park, St. KittsVolcanoes vs Red Force – Windsor Park, DominicaROUND 5February 13 to 16Scorpions vs Hurricanes – Trelawny Stadium, JamaicaPride vs Red Force – Kensington OvalVolcanoes vs Jaguars – Grenada National Stadium, Grenada***BREAK***ROUND 6February 27 to March 1Scorpions vs Jaguars – Trelawny Stadium, JamaicaPride vs Volcanoes – Kensington OvalHurricanes vs Red Force – Warner ParkROUND 7March 5 to 8Red Force vs Pride – Brian Lara Cricket AcademyVolcanoes vs Scorpions – Grenada National StadiumJaguars vs Hurricanes – Guyana National StadiumROUND 8March 12 to 15Red Force vs Volcanoes – Brian Lara Cricket Academy (2 pm daily)Hurricanes vs Scorpions – Vivian Richards Cricket GroundJaguars vs Pride – Guyana National Stadium (2 pm daily)***BREAK***ROUND 9March 26 to 29Pride vs Scorpions – Kensington Oval (2 pm daily)Hurricanes vs Volcanoes – Vivian Richards Cricket GroundRed Force vs Jaguars – Queen’s Park Oval, TrinidadROUND 10April 2 to 5Jaguars vs Volcanoes – Guyana National StadiumScorpions vs Red Force – Sabina Park (2 pm daily)Pride vs Hurricanes – Kensington Oval
“That is really going to be up to Buff and his leg or ankle and that aspect of things,” Cheveldayoff said about how long Byfuglien’s recovery could take via the Athletic. “There’s still a few more phases to go before anything potentially could become real. He’s working at an outside clinic. Do we know how the progress [is going]? Sure. We get updates on how the progress is going. Are we directing it? No. The doctor who he had the surgery [with] is directing it.”Byfuglien’s absence from the Winnipeg Jets has loomed over the team like a specter this season. The burly defenseman took a personal leave of absence in September that later turned into speculation he was considering retiring. The Jets suspended Byfuglien during training camp so as to get off the hook for his $7.6 million salary until he does report, but the matter was only further complicated when the 34-year-old underwent ankle surgery in October and the NHLPA filed a grievance on his behalf challenging his suspension. The 2010s: Crosby named NHL Athlete of the Decade | NHL All-Decade TeamOn New Year’s Eve, the general manager noted that Byfuglien’s injuries limited him to only 16 NHL games in the last calendar year (10 in the regular season, six during the first round of the 2019 NHL playoffs). He added that the defenseman has progressed to the rehab phase as part of his recovery from that October surgery; however, he doesn’t know how long that phase will last. As the clock turns to 2020, Winnipeg Jets fans must wonder whether suspended defenseman Dustin Byfuglien will even take the ice for the team this season. Will the team even welcome him back after he returns from an October ankle surgery and if he wants to play?General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff on Monday tried to answer those questions when he spoke to reporters as part of a state of the union address of sorts midway through the Jets’ season. “The first and foremost thing is Dustin Byfuglien has to decide in his mind that he wants to play,” he added. “That’s the biggest hypothetical, so we can all answer those hypotheticals if that one gets answered first. He’s been off for quite a while now.”Dustin Byfuglien has RIDICULOUS accuracy! 😱 pic.twitter.com/nzMOiDfMmm— DJ Blitz (@djblitzwpg) April 15, 2019When it comes to the players association’s grievance filed on Byfuglien’s behalf, Cheveldayoff said he has not yet received an update on the potential timeline for that process. He also did not know whether or not Byfuglien is close to skating again, and even said he has not spoken to the veteran defenseman in some time.Ultimately, the cards appear to be in Byfuglien’s hands — and his team, sitting just inside the Western Conference’s playoff picture on New Year’s Eve, does not seem to know how or when he might play them.
Bronze, silver or gold: South African female sporting heroes have long carried the pride of the country on their shoulders and in their hearts. But raising the profile of South African women in sport takes blood, sweat and tears, on and off the field. Sporting bodies and pioneers in the industry are hard at work to ensure that women’s sport is well established, receives sufficient financial backing, and gets free and fair media coverage. One sure fact is that there’s always something to celebrate. SA’s National Women’s soccer team, Banyana Banyana made history in November last year after qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time. The team, led by their fearless coach Desiree Ellis, will be heading out to France to compete in June.A star player worthy of a special mention is Portia Modise, retired Banyana Banyana’s all-time leading goal-scorer who has been selected as one of 13 FIFA ambassadors for the upcoming Women’s World Cup, a role she has taken up with high regards. Apart from her excellent striker skills on the field, Portia has always advocated for women in sport to be treated equal to their male counterparts, especially in the area of remuneration.Speaking to Fifa.com in a recent interview, Portia said: “This (WWC) is going to bring change for a lot of young women and open a platform for girls who didn’t know where to go. I think things will slowly change.”Another resilient voice advocating for women in sport, is Brand South Africa’s Board Trustee, Ms. Muditambi Ravele. In her capacity as chairperson of the South African Women & Sports Foundation, Ms. Ravele addressed delegates at the 2018 FIFA Women’s Administrators four-day Course in August last year, where she spoke about the misconception that women are constantly tearing one another down, highlighting how much support women give each other. Known for pushing boundaries, Ms. Ravele encourages many sportswomen to join what is predominantly perceived as male-dominated sports, like boxing. In raising the profile of women in sport, Brand South Africa’s Play Your Part Ambassador and Sports Media Personality, Kass Naidoo utilises her platform Gsport, to celebrate South African women in sport. Gsport aims to improve the media profile of South African women in sport, that will in turn, help with more sponsorship opportunities. Through extensive media coverage, Gsport wishes to on-board Corporate South Africa to stand behind female athletes.Brand South Africa commends these pioneers who not only engage in on-going dialogues that encourage a strengthened Nation Brand, but also lead by example.

No, people aren’t getting tired of it, it’s actually getting old, as in its population is aging. In May of 2008, the median age for Facebook was 26. Today, it’s 33, a good seven years older. That’s an interesting turn of events for a site once built for the exclusive use of college students. So where are today’s college students hanging out now? Well, to some extent, they’re still on Facebook, despite having to share the space with moms, dads, grandparents, and bosses. Surprisingly though, they’re also headed to another network you may have heard of: Twitter. As it turns out, Gen Y likes Twitter…Well, maybe not, but they are using itOver the course of the year, there have been countless reports – some more substantial than others – but all with the same message: Generation Y is just not interested in Twitter. The reports generally cited members of this demographic as saying Twitter was “pointless” and “narcissistic.” Apparently, that’s beginning to change. Well, maybe not their perception of Twitter, but certainly their use of it. Today, Twitter is now the second-youngest of the top four social networking sites. Its median age is 31. MySpace’s is 26, LinkedIn is 39, and, as noted above, Facebook is 33.When looking at specific younger demographic segments, and not just Gen Y, you can see strong Twitter uptake over the past year. For example, 37% of those 18-24 now use Twitter when only 19% did back in December 2008. And in the slightly older 25-34 bracket, a portion of which could still be considered Gen Y, 31% are now using the service compared to only 20% in December of last year. Combined, these two groups account for more than half of Twitter’s network. Why is Gen Y Now Flocking to Twitter? So what gives? Why has Gen Y seemingly changed their minds about the social microblogging network that only months ago they avoided? A recent AP article offered up some ideas including the influx of celebrity tweeters, pressure from teachers or bosses, and it even hinted that Gen Y’ers entering the workplace have found value in the network for business-related purposes. That same sentiment was shared by Meredith Sires of Gen Y trend-watching site, YPulse. She theorizes that the rapid growth in the 18-24 demographic has to do more with the recent college graduates segment of that group finding ways to build entirely new online contact lists and create new identities more closely tied to information-sharing. However, there have not been any in-depth studies that detail all the various reasons that Gen Y has chosen to adopt the microblogging network. To date, everything cited consists of just theories and speculations based on anecdotal evidence. But while all the ideas have merit, the theory that rings truest to our ears is the one put forth by Craig Watkins, a University of Texas professor and author of the book “The Young and the Digital.” He says that what we’re seeing is “…a kind of closing of that generational gap as it relates to technology.” In other words, young and old alike are joining the same networks and socializing in the same spaces. At this point, we would have to agree. After all, Gen Y (or Gen Z for that matter), hasn’t all of a sudden flocked to some new social networking site where the majority of the online user base mostly consists of their peers. Although some niche sites like FML, Failblog, TextsFromLastNight, and Sporcle have apparently attracted this young crowd, their numbers are dwarfed by those of Facebook, Twitter, and the like. It seems as if Gen Y is simply content to join the older adults on the top social networks of today and not strike out on their own…and vice versa. The older social networking users, in turn, never really set up shop on networks designed just for them like the (now “hibernating”) Boomj, a social network for baby boomers, or the online old folks home eons.com. They, too, have gravitated towards Facebook and Twitter. Will this ever change? Will there ever be another network dominated by the digital youth? Of course no one can know for sure, but odds are that unless it’s a closed-off network where entry is barred to those over a certain age, any new social network will have trouble keeping the grown-ups out these days. And even if some such network ever sprang into existence, it may struggle to attract the Gen Y members it desires – especially since they’re so content to socialize on the sites they already use. And now that they’ve added Twitter to that list, the challenge to draw them away to yet another social networking site may prove even more difficult than before.Note: statistics in this article are from Pew Internet’s Recent Report on Twitter for Fall 2009 Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit
The National Youth Service (NYS) will be implementing new strategies and programmes in the 2013/2014 financial year, to effectively meet the needs of the targeted cohort. Speaking at the launch of the NYS Summer Programme, in Kingston, on Wednesday, April 3, Minister of Youth and Culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna, said greater emphasis will be placed on the promotion of social and cultural entrepreneurship. “We will also be redirecting some of our young people into self employment. We are looking at areas such as agricultural entrepreneurship, more mentoring for our rural youth, craft and fashion design, and we are looking at manufacturing for some of our urban young people as well,” Ms Hanna said. [RELATED: Thousands to Participate in NYS Summer Programme] The NYS will also be exploring areas such as music and business, and integrating them within its curriculum. Ms Hanna said the organisation will also seek to integrate social values, cultural identity and love for country into the NYS programmes. “Right now the economic environment and the state of the economy make it critical for us at the National Youth Service to prepare young people to earn a living and to contribute to national development,” she said. She noted that shorter programmes with shorter curriculum will be implemented by the agency, while adding that some 11,584 young people will be targeted by the NYS for various programmes this financial year. “We are looking at a youth apprenticeship programme, and a graduate work experience, because we recognise that we have some young people out there who graduated from university and need internship and some experience, so that their resumes can be improved. We will also be having a success camp, and financial assistance,” Miss Hanna said. She noted that there could be an amendment to the National Youth Service Act, to allow persons below the age of 17 to participate in the summer programme. Some 3,750 spaces are available for secondary and tertiary students between 17 and 24 years of age to participate in the NYS Summer Programme. The deadline to send in application forms is April 26, 2013. By Latonya Linton, JIS Reporter

The UK video sector grew by 10% in 2018 taking the total market value to £2.34 billion, according to the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE).The Greatest ShowmanThe BASE figures, based on data from the Official Charts Company and Futuresource Consulting, indicate that 63% of consumers now choose to rent or stream film and TV content, while 37% of category value generated by people choosing to buy and own content either on disc or download.Despite what BASE described as a “challenging broader high street trading environment,” 59% of transactional spend was still for the physical formats of DVD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. The growth of digital transactional also “surpassed all expectations in 2018,” reaching a total market value of £400 million. Electronic sell-through film sales grew 36% year-on-year with The Greatest Showman establishing itself as the largest digital release to date, selling in excess of 770,000 digital copies since April.Overall, The Greatest Showman was the biggest-selling title of the year, shifting in excess of 2.68 million copies, with 72% of those sales coming from physical formats.Game of Thrones led the 2018 TV charts, with The Complete Seventh Season selling more than 160,000 copies, including box sets, to top the disc chart. Overall franchise sales totalled more than a quarter of a million copies, according to BASE.“The UK transactional digital video exceeded expectations in 2018, cementing its position as a global leader in this sector,” said Futuresource Consulting’s principal analyst for entertainment, David Sidebottom.“Electronic sell-through movies have excelled throughout the year, as consumers become increasingly familiar with the concept and service provider competition fuels purchases. iVoD (movie rentals via online services) has also witnessed increased momentum in 2018, growing by over 20%, with an additional 4 million smart TVs and media streamers in UK homes helping drive uptake.”BASE chief executive, Liz Bales, said: “The third consecutive year of growth in the video category underlines the fact that audiences remain engaged with a broad variety of home entertainment content and format options. This serves as a testament to the innovation and energy that continue to drive the home entertainment category even as the high street retail environment presents clear challenges in some areas.”“Today’s customers enjoy a multitude of options when it comes to keeping themselves entertained and clearly continue to find a huge amount of relevance in the video category which, more flexibly than ever before, caters to every need; whether that is watching on the go, building a digital library or securing the absolute best viewing experience premium formats now guarantee.”
