Eye Care Mission Could Exceed Surgery Target

first_img The 11-member Chinese technical team is performing free cataract surgeries at the Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) on Jamaicans in need. The members, who began working at KPH from April 2 and will end on 26, comprise five ophthalmologists, three nurses, two engineers and one technician. Health Minister, Dr. the Hon. They came a few weeks ago with a commitment to do 500 surgeries and I understand they have done some 440. So, we are well on target to achieving the 500 mark and I am told we may exceed that, so it really demonstrates the importance of partnerships in public health. The mission has been successful and we would like to see more of it,” he noted.Dr. Tufton said he welcomes the collaboration with the Chinese Government to support this area of healthcare.“Eye care is a significant area in Jamaica. It is typically underserved. We are moving to sharpen the policy and improve the focus to ensure greater prevention and buildout capacity for curative measures,” he said.  Dr. Tufton said the collaboration has had several other positive results in shared knowledge and information between local and international medical teams.Retiree, Jo-Anne Bromfield, who had her surgery on April 10, said the experience was a positive one. “It was good. Thanks be to the Lord. I can see properly now,” she toldJIS News.Miguel Bradley, who also received the surgery on his right eye, said he can already see positive results from the procedure.“Things are brighter. I can see clearly. Before I had foggy vision, now I can see crystal clear,” he said.To date, 1,000 persons have been screened and 600 selected for surgery. In addition to the surgeries, the mission has also donated medical equipment to KPH, and offer training to the nurses and doctors.This is Bright Journey’s second visit to Jamaica. In May 2015, more than 200 Jamaicans benefited from free cataract surgeries at the KPH, while the hospital was gifted medical equipment and supplies valued at US$400,000.last_img read more

Barry Diller, the owner of Daily Beast, will take on the role of executive chairman.Sydney Harman, an audio entrepreneur, bought Newsweek from the Washington Post Co. in August 2010. Jane Harman is a former U.S. representative for California’s 36th Congressional district. Newsweek and Daily Beast officially merged on February 1st, and debuted a redesign days later with the March 7th installment of the Tina Brown-led publication. In the days after Sidney Harman’s death (due to leukemia complications) on April 13th, the media speculated who would replace him in the role of Newsweek chairman. Indian companies likely to give 106 salary hike in 2016 says Towers

first_imgDomestic companies are expected to hand out an average salary hike of 10.8% to their employees in 2016 even as they become less optimistic over growth prospects, according to a consulting firm.However, a spike in inflation will eat into a significant part of the salary hike, said the firm.”India is expected to see an overall projected salary increase of 10.8%. Factoring inflation at 6.1%, the net salary increase in 2016 is expected to be marginally higher at 4.7% as against 4.5% last year, when inflation was at 5.9%,” said Nasdaq-listed professional services firm Towers Watson.The expected salary hike would come about despite a bearish mood among nearly 58% of the Indian companies about their business growth, Towers Watson said in its report titled “2015-16 Asia-Pacific Salary Budget Planning Report.””Employers may be bearish in thinking there is a weak business outlook given the current poor market data, but the case is the opposite for employees, who hold bullish expectations for salary rises. Employers will need to carefully manage employees’ longer term expectations, if they are to achieve a content workforce,” Business Standard quoted Sambhav Rakyan, Data Services practice leader Asia Pacific at Towers Watson, as saying.The “top performers” are likely to see an average hike of 12.5%, while “above average” and “average” performers could receive 11% and 9.7%, respectively.Employees in the energy sector are expected to get the highest salary hike in 2016 at 11.5%. IBM India refutes reports of mass layoffs in the coming months appraisal

Managers have been asked to identify underperformers,” and another revealed that the company is also not hiring anyone as of now.While the layoff reports may have created quite a buzz among employees in the IT sector, IBM explained that a few may be affected by the performance-based appraisal, which happens every year. “Re-skilling and rebalancing is an ongoing process as we accelerate the benefits of cognitive and cloud technologies for clients around the world,” the US-based firm said in a statement.
