passed against Kim Jong Un’s regime by the UN Security Council last week It led to heated rhetoric between the United States and North Korea with threats of attacks “We are monitoring the situation on the Korean peninsula and the region very closely” the IOC said on Friday from Lausanne Switzerland “The IOC is keeping itself informed about the developments We continue working with the organizing Workers in hard hats and coveralls were still working on Rio de Janeiro’s newest subway line on Monday two days after it was inaugurated by Brazilian leaders and four days before the start of the 2016 Olympics it was built to serve The 10-billion-real ($31 billion) Line 4 designed to be the main mover of people to and from the Olympic Park in Rio’s distant Barra beachfront neighbourhood was scheduled to be the biggest legacy project of an Olympics where many other urban improvement promises such as cleaning up sewage or reducing air pollution have not been met “We’re still finishing up the project which opened unfinished like all government projects” an electrician working on the station told Reuters The man who declined to give a name because he was not authorised to speak to the press was stringing wire at the Sao Conrado station one of the most important on Line 4 because it will serve residents of the giant Rocinha shanty town The Rio Barra consortium which built Line 4 said work on the line is 100 percent complete and that the workers do not work for them Metro Rio which operates the line said the workers are only removing equipment still on site after completion Line 4 reduces travel times to about an hour between more central neighbourhoods such as Copacabana where many tourists are staying and the Olympic Park in Barra where much of the Games will take place That’s far shorter than bus travel times especially during rush hour when the journey can take two hours or more But while officially open the system remains closed to most Cariocas as Rio de Janeiro residents are known Until the end of the Paralympics in September the line will be open only to members of the “Olympic Family” or qualified athletes support staff Olympic workers and journalists with the appropriate credentials Fans with valid same-day tickets for games or events such as the opening ceremony will be able to use it from Aug 5 After the Olympics and Paralympics the line will close again temporarily for work on connections with another line Full access is not expected until sometime during the last three months of 2016 Work continues mostly behind the scenes such as in the service areas of stations but there were at one stage serious concerns that the line would not open in time for the Olympics at all As a result Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes had News On the congested balcony a patio rather of India’s dressing room Virat Kohli and others were jostling for space their palms ready to clatter Mohammad Shami was skimming through his viewfinder to shoot the perfect shot The sparse but vocal crowd was impatient Ashwin meanwhile was squiggling to run the run that would bring up his fourth Test hundred In reality he had spent only seven balls on his 99 But it seemed like he was waiting for an eternity to wriggle that single On a couple of instances he was too eager for the run that Wriddhiman Saha had to alert him of the prowling fielders Then he thought he had clipped Miguel Cummins past the keeper but for Shane Dowrich to lunge like a goalkeeper to block it Saha didn’t alleviate Ashwin’s anxiety levels either Saha ran a single off the fifth ball of the 113th over Next over the penultimate over of the first session he sprinted for another single off the last ball In the 22 balls after an airy boundary that took him to 99 Ashwin faced only seven balls Saha who was on 76 when Ashwin had moved to 99 added 27 more runs Had there been one more over before lunch Saha had a realistic prospect of completing his maiden hundred before Ashwin It didn’t fluster Ashwin but most batsmen expect for those in the elusive Sehwag-Gilchrist bracket aren’t immune to the jitteriness that accompanies the nervous nineties More than nervousness it’s a queasy stomach-churning sensation Ashwin waited for 40 minutes the duration of the tea break before he could think of accomplishing the landmark So did Saha who seemed to be in haste to cross his first three-figure mark in Test cricket Professional sportsmen are expected to have a practised detachment to personal landmarks — that’s what they say publicly But batsmen treading their 90s can be pardoned if they confess that they do feel nervous The excruciating anticipation of reaching the magical three-figure mark that brings with it a deluge of emotions — relief joy vindication retribution – can be harrowing Ashwin experienced that hard to describe feeling for the second time in this series when he wristed Roston Chase over wide mid on off the eighth ball he faced after lunch Then 24 balls later with a square drive that has been his favourite shot of the day Saha experienced that experience for the first time in his Test career It was the remarkable high point of a remarkable alliance one that not only pulled India out of strife but also pulled the rug from underneath the West Indies’ feet The latter dominant at this point of time on Tuesday were chasing the silhouette of a tall first-innings score That it was India’s second highest sixth-wicket partnership abroad implies the magnitude of the partnership and in the longer and bigger scheme of things the assurance Ashwin and Saha abodes well for a team that is insistent on a five-specialist bowlers theory In commanding position If any doubt lingered on the utility of the lower-half of India’s batting order despite intermittent reminders this partnership snuffed it all Arguments like West Indies blew away their advantage with shoddy bowling and field settings or they were benefactors of spilled catches ring hollow Here India were in utter disarray and the-now dead strip was truly alive The sheer pressure of such a score would fray nerves Anyway irrespective of the conditions or circumstance a 213-run partnership commands credit Take out those 213 runs and the eventual total of 353 falls apart The underpinning thread of their association was equitability They of course had different methods Ashwin was dreamy Saha was pugnacious But there was no hero-sidekick lead actor-support cast divide Both played with their own specific pace and tempo always chatting encouraging and celebrating their personal and partnership milestones There wasn’t any set patterns like Ashwin performed a specific role or Saha was assigned another They found considerable comfort in each other’s company and batted with the calm efficiency of any top order batting pair That they had previously managed only a pittance—155 runs (of those 71 came in Antigua) in their eight previous associations—comes as shock In a single innings they bettered it suggesting it could be the beginning of a special lower-order chemistry and India’s lower order is in safe hands For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App More Top NewsMoscow: Alexei Smertin once denied the existence of racism in Russia but now the former national team captain and Chelsea midfielder is in charge of tackling the problem as the World Cup looms Back in 2015 Smertin told the BBC that "there’s no racism in Russia definitely because you know it doesn’t exist" as the country marked 1000 days to the tournament that kicks off in June 2018 File image of Former Russian soccer player Alexey Smertin Reuters But this February the long-haired ex-player was chosen to spearhead the campaign to crack down on the sort of racial abuse that has seen ethnic minority players regularly targeted in the country His appointment as the Russia Football Union’s anti-racism inspector raised some eyebrows as critics argued that once again it showed the authorities were not serious about tackling the issue Now with one year to go to the World Cup and a few days to the warm-up Confederations Cup Smertin appears to have changed his tune slightly — even if he remains sure racism won’t be a problem "The fact of the existence of racism around the world is obvious but it’s not only Russia’s problem" Smertin 42 told AFP "Russia is a multi-ethnic and multi-confessional country where different people have got along for ages and I’m confident that no incidents of racism will take place here during the Confederations and the World Cups" ‘Respect’ Despite his earlier statement Smertin insists that his background playing in top-flight clubs abroad and high profile as Russia’s former captain make him the right person for the job The workhorse player won the 2005 English Premier League with Chelsea alongside stars like Didier Drogba and also turned out for teams including Fulham and Bordeaux Between 1996 and 2006 he won 55 caps with Russia "The experience of playing in the multi-national and multi-racial teams had a very positive impact on me" he said "Meanwhile my devotion to football and sometimes self-sacrifice on the pitch helped me to win the respect of my colleagues and the supporters" Smertin remained vague on what exactly his job entails but said a major focus was reaching out to supporters of all ages to try to change attitudes "Our job is to educate football fans" he said "The youth is our primary audience as we hope to raise a younger generation with a genuine love and true respect for the game" Russia’s image has been tarnished by repeated high-profile incidents of abuse against ethnic minority players in recent years and those in charge have often been accused of downplaying the issue Fears of broader fan violence also spiralled after brutal clashes between Russian and English football fans at the Euro 2016 championship in France But Smertin insists those worries are exaggerated and pointed to examples like Rostov hosting Manchester United in the Europa League this season as proof foreign fans have nothing to fear "The British media warned Manchester United supporters that they should beware of the Russians and keep alert" he said "But in Rostov locals brought blankets to the stands of their venue to protect the visiting fans from the frosty weather during the match" "The majority of football lovers respect their club rivals and their supporters" Smertin said "But a small proportion of fans choose such a wrong-headed method of expressing themselves that spoils the positive background to the game" By: Express News Service | Chandigarh | Published: January 16 2016 9:35 am Chandigarh International Airport Top News The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday granted 10 days’ time to the Centre to respond to ensure operation of international flights from Chandigarh International Airport at the earliest The court asked the central government to file its reply to a public interest litigation filed by the Mohali Industries Association seeking directions to the authorities concerned to ensure operation of the international terminal of the Chandigarh International Airport When the case came up for hearing before the division bench headed by Justice SK Mittal on Friday the Centre failed to file its reply to the court notice issued to it on December 24 last year However in its reply the Punjab government informed the court that it had been taking up the case with the ministry of civil aviation to start international flights from the Chandigarh airport and other issues regarding the airport before and after its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year It was submitted that Punjab Chief Minister as well as the chief secretary had written letters to the central government authorities regarding the issue The Mohali Industries Association represents 485 large medium and small scale industrial units located in Mohali and its surroundings The petitioner association has submitted that the non-operation of the international airport is causing huge loss not only to the public exchequer but also to the passenger services business and industries in Punjab Haryana and Himachal Pradesh It has been submitted that delay in operation of the international airport also poses a great loss to the potential foreign investment in the region The association submitted in the court that in 2007 keeping in mind the increase in international passenger and commercial freight traffic the government authorities had proposed an international airport at Mohali at Rs 939 crore over an area of around 305 acres and consequently formed the Chandigarh International Airport Limited for executing this venture This project is also aimed at reducing the burden on Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi and to provide convenient mode of transportation for Himachal Pradesh
