Arsenal centre back signing to solve problem at last? Five targets to consider

His performances have led to interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, but should Arsenal also join the chase? At 29-years-old, Wenger may prefer younger options, but there’s no doubt experience is needed in the Arsenal defence. Besides, with suggestions Wenger is starting to think about short-term success, with retirement in mind, proven world class talent may override concerns about age. 5. Jose Gimenez (Atletico Madrid) – The 21-year-old, who is reportedly on Barcelona and Real Madrid’s radar, could be considering an exit from Atletico having been left hurt by not playing in the Champions League final defeat earlier this year. He’s still learning the game, but could prove to be a defensive diamond. 5 4. Ashley Williams (Swansea City) – Williams might be a shock inclusion on this list, which some Arsenal fans may laugh off. But as captain for club and country, the 31-year-old may be just the leader needed in north London. He’s perhaps running out of time to move to an ‘elite’ club and after an excellent Euro 2016 campaign with Wales, may feel the time is right to test himself in the Champions League and with a team challenging for the Premier League title. Would Wenger feel the same? 3. Fabian Schar (Hoffenheim) – It’s not the first time Schar has been linked with a move to the Premier League, having attracted interest two summers’ ago. His performances for Switzerland at the Euro 2016 finals have enhanced his reputation further and he should perhaps be considered by Wenger. Comfortable on the ball and aggressive in his tackling – as well as being an attacking threat from set pieces – he could slot in well alongside Laurent Koscielny. 1. Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) – check out the remaining four centre backs Arsenal should consider signing this summer by clicking the arrow above, right – Varane is among the best central defenders under the age of 25, and will be Zinedine Zidane’s first choice as the long-term replacement to Sergio Ramos. But money talks and in recent years the Gunners have loosened the purse strings a little. Wenger favours building for the future and Varane fits the bill. Jose Mourinho is known to be an admirer of the Frenchman and has been linked with a bid at Manchester United. That should act as extra motive in Wenger cementing his interest. Arsenal fans are hoping their club sends a major signal of intent in the summer transfer window. They’ve already sealed a deal for Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka, followed by the less celebrated Japan striker Takuma Asano, but they aren’t likely to be finished yet.Reports have largely focused on the Gunners wanting to sign a world-class centre forward, but is there another area that perhaps needs as much attention – if not more – than their attacking options?Arsene Wenger’s defence has continued to receive criticism, with Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista not seemingly the quality needed to bring the Premier League title to the Emirates. So should Wenger be targeting a new partner for Laurent Koscielny in the heart of his side’s defence? With this question in mind, talkSPORT has identified five centre backs Arsenal would be wise to consider a move for this summer.Take a look at the options, above, and let us know what you think – just leave a comment below… 5last_img
